We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Xavier Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Xavier , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I recently packed up everything I owned and moved to Richmond, VA. I left behind very good clients with trust that the universe had something for me. I am challenging myself daily to be the very best I can. No doubt or fear can get in the way at this point. Honestly I just felt that it was time to go. I am from Georgia so moving here was a big leap. I have reached a point in my career where I am building my dream clientele. I have downsized and decided to focus on myself and the client. Having lower over head costs have made it to where I can invest in products and other things that I have always wanted to do.
I am fresh here but everything feels so good to me. I know I am aligned and It is a fresh start built on good intention. I am open to whatever the universe brings my way. I know it has my back.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am from Columbus, GA. I got my start at Spencer High School. Cosmetology was the only class I would attend. I honestly was just not interested in anything else. Early on my love for hair was my driving force. I loved everything about hair. When shopping with my mother I would stand beside the salon in JC penny just to smell the hair color and perm transforming the tresses of these wonderful ladies, who could all afford the beauty salon. I began calling salons in the yellow pages and found a salon assistant position at Designs Unlimited. The owner Teri Green was a very successful stylist and a true industry leader. Her short haircuts were her most popular service and she had an abundant clientele. I was her shampoo boy and I loved every second of it. She was kind to me and she still is someone I admire in the industry.
Learning form the best was a part of my journey. I listen to your hair. Every head has a song and your hair tells the story. Anyone loosing their hair is a hard thing. Alopecia and hair loss issues are serious and I make people feel good about their hair again. I do not offer any services that will further damage the hair. I educate my clients on the proper way to maintain their hair. Some color services we would not think of providing. It just depends on what your hair can handle. Uniquely designed is every strand on the head of a potential client and I find the song. My approach is Healing. I use a combination of professional products and natures natural remedies such as rosemary, mint, aloe, banana organic honey etc.
Sometimes it is best to just wear your crown. You can add extensions, you can wear a protective style, You can even get braids but the consistency of wearing these styles can have life changing consequences. Relaxers and hair Color need to be applied by a professional with experience on the proper applications .All of this is what sets me apart from others. My secret is listening to the song. Every Head has one. There is healing in the hair.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me to grow my clientele was to just not settle. I tried the corporate thing when you are cutting 24 to 26 heads a day and ruining your back and wrist. I know that does not work for me. I like to take pride in my work and provide and an experience. I am not gonna waste my gifts for a fraction of my profits. I had to get to the point where I chose me and my business. My social medias have really worked for me to get the buzz going in this area.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I can remember early in my career everything was personal. Now, not so much. I am 35 years old and I see things a lot different than I did in my twenties. I unlearned so much. We attract the things we want or do not want. It is a big pill to swallow but life can change when you accept responsibility for your life. I have learned to live and let live and accept and release. I am growing daily and I am aligned with my highest purpose. I am literally living my best life and it feels so good. No Stress, just Life in Abundance. I can breath. I can feel the sun. I am so grateful for everything I have I couldn’t waste a millisecond on anything other than that. I am resting in peace all while serving my clients one at a time caring for their hair and we get results together. Success in the salon is a partnership. My clients trust me to do what is best for them and I listen to their desires and we achieve the result together.
