Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Xanquila Mckinnon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Xanquila, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Unwavering focus. We live in a society of distraction. An age of social media and never ending streaming services. You have to be willing to step away from it all for as long as it takes. Eliminate all distractions. Not only that, but you have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone and feel uncomfortable for as long as it takes. Everybody wants success, whatever that may mean to them. Everybody wants wealth and financial freedom. But to be successful you can’t be like everybody. You can’t do what everybody else is doing. You must be willing to wake up before everyone else, or be willing to go to sleep later than everyone else. You must be willing to take the kind of risks that would terrify the average person. This is the difference between ordinary and extraordinary.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, my name is Xanquila and I recently graduated from Barry University School of Law with my Juris Doctor degree. I got into the fashion world during my 2nd year of law school. I’d always loved seeing how influencers online would put together different styles of outfits, and their creativity inspired me to start posting my own pictures online wearing different looks. Eventually my passion for fashion birthed the idea for “X.A.N: A New Wave of Exclusivity.” I already had the ideas and a beautiful model, the only thing left was to create the platform. On September 15th of that year, X.A.N LLC was formed.
X.A.N is a local boutique that sells women’s clothing ranging from casual date night to extravagant special occasion pieces. What sets X.A.N apart from a lot of other boutiques in Orlando is the fact that quality is never sacrificed for a quick buck. All of our inventory is inspected and tested by myself before being placed online. Since day one I’ve always gone by the same saying: I’d never sell anything to my customers that I wouldn’t wear myself.” And I’ve kept that same energy throughout the years as my business has expanded.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As I’ve previously mentioned, I began my entrepreneurial journey during law school. Law school is a beast on its own, but starting a business during a pandemic is a different kind of struggle. You have to create a website, buy inventory, etc. all while keeping up with your daily required case law readings and preparing for midterms/final exams. For the most part I can say that I was able to successfully balance both. It did get to a pivotal point where I had to take a brief break from my business in order to focus on studying for my final exams. That was a hard decision to make because I was afraid that I would lose customers. But I was able to find ways to automate my business so that my ads, sales, and social media postings could work themselves during those times I needed to step away.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I’m still trying to figure out that perfect formula for attracting new customers. I have my busy seasons, and then I have months that are slower. Overall, social media has been an amazing tool for growing my business. More specifically, Facebook advertising and Instagram reels. My favorite of course are the Instagram reels because they’re fun to make and free!
