We were lucky to catch up with Wynter Aiken recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wynter, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
The biggest thing about trying to make it big in your career is having those around you that not only care about you, but also celebrating your craft with you. Ever since I started putting my work of writing and creating out into the world, getting my friends and even closest family members to support and share has been a major reality check because they don’t do it. I had to come to the realization that even though they aren’t my target audience and they love me, they don’t HAVE to support what I do. They aren’t obligated and a writer and creative, I think that’s one of the hardest things we deal with on a daily basis, especially when posting to social media and promoting our work. I am grateful to those that do show love to my work publicly, it makes the job less lonely and less unsupportive, but asking for support shouldn’t always feel like a chore or burden.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am Wynter Aiken, writer, editor, and content creator. I am also one-third of the Rahway, New Jersey based, self-publishing company-Rahway Girlz Publishing! I have been writing every since I fell in love with poetry back in middle school. ( I’m sure everyone had an outlet when dealing with bullies-mine was poetry. Typical nerd. LOL). Writing has always been a kind friend to me, so much I went to school for it, expanded into creative writing and journalism, and eventually started my own magazine called RGP Muse Magazine. I love the idea of sharing someone else’s career and journey in their respective industries.
Anyone that I feature in RGP Muse Magazine becomes my muse and inspiration because you never know what someone else has been through or what hardships they have experienced in order to achieve success. I make it my own mission to celebrate them, whether they are an independent artist trying to make it in New York or a ballerina dancing on Broadway. Writing is my passion, dream, and constant job that I love and through Rahway Girlz Publishing, I only get better in my craft.
I hope when people view my magazine, see my work through other publications, or even just have a conversation with me, they see the hardwork and dedication that I try my best to put forth. I sometimes get lost in the chaos of writing and creating, it can get draining, but I think to myself-I have a gift given to me and it’s best to put it to good use!

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Being that I have a magazine, the most effective and sometimes draining strategy to getting people to be featured in the magazine is promotion via social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook! They are my favorite platforms to use because I’ve noticed artists tend to showcase their talent on those two the most. Especially if you are a singer or DJ, you’re bound to see them on Instagram or Facebook live. I create my own promotions and ads so it has been effective when getting people to be featured. Word of mouth also works too. Facebook thankfully also has tools that can have my ads of my magazine being shown in various parts of the country and even the world. It has worked very well, I had a poet and author feature in my third issue, that was from Nigeria! It was surreal to think my magazine could be reached all the way out there. Social media has it perks and my strategy of consistency via promotion has worked in my favor so far.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal for my written work of RGP Muse Magazine is feature and showcase people that have an unheard story. I want everyone from all walks of creative life to be shown in a beautiful light through my publication. Before I really put my work out there, I was lost in what I wanted to do and what my purpose truly was. Starting RGP Muse Magazine made me realize that I couldn’t be selfish with my gift of writing. I had to use it to put stories out that deserved to heard. Whether you’re an artist struggling to get your pieces in a gallery or small business out in Metuchen, NJ, I want to know you. I want to know your passions and how your creativity has evolved. I think anyone can be inspired by an untold story and I make it my mission through RGP Muse Magazine, for it to be heard.
