Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wynee Bermudez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Wynee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
At the beginning, I was so worried about all of the fluff (fancy equipment, filters, etc) and too concerned about “how I looked” to others that I let that interfere with my potential growth.
I started noticing consistent growth when I was actually just being myself and sharing content that EYE was actually excited to share and talk about.
I would have also told myself that I’m playing the long game. I first started sharing content on the internet in 2017 and wasn’t making money until 2021/2022.
Wynee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started a food blog called Wynee & Wine in 2016, which then turned into Wynee’s World in 2017 as a travel blog. I have always wanted a blog of some sort, and I had just graduated college and thought that it was the perfect time to do so, as I was still not sure what I wanted to do.
During the pandemic, due to no travel I did a 180 on content and went back to food but with a heavier emphasis on local food in Charlotte. I had a video of birria tacos go viral in the summer of 2020 and the rest is history. I take pride in those pandemic years (2020,2021) in really helping shine a light on small business owners to a new audience that didn’t know about them before my videos.
What sets me apart from other content creators is that at this point, I don’t worry too much about fluff. I take my videos/content, write a voiceover and piece it together. I think I come across as pretty authentic and not fake or cheesy. What helps this is that most of the content I get is just me documenting my life. Most of the content I’m posting, I’m paying for out of pocket.
As of right now, I’m most proud of being named Charlottean of the Year for the year 2021. I am so honored to have been a bridge of connection for so many customers and small business owners. I’m also proud that as an influencer, I was given that title because so many times in this industry, you don’t feel legitimate because “you’re posting on social media” – but the impact of social can exceed so much.
I want everyone to know that I share content because I enjoy it and it brings me joy. I have a running joke, that I would still be creating content at 90 years old even if no one paid attention. I’m not an overly produced content creator, but that is something that helps me connect with my audience. I want it to feel like your friend posted it, and not some random content creator that you follow.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
A lot of people automatically have a sour taste in their mouth from stories they’ve heard from other content creators/influencers and business owners. Some business owners have experienced really crappy content creators/influencers.
I make it a point that if I want to check a new restaurant out, try a dish, etc I’m never expecting a business owner to comp me or cover it for me. I think showing business owners that I respect them and their business is one way that I’ve built my reputation. I don’t want to add onto the stigma that so many content creators face, and I want to be the great experience someone had after having a not so good experience.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot completely during covid. At the time, I was mainly blogging about travel. Once everything shut down, there was clearly a need on both ends (small business owners to get more business and audiences learning about said businesses). I was also posting about food at this time, but I decided to double down on posting about local food in Charlotte.
It was a learning curve for me because there was so much happening at the time with small business owners and everything seemed to be non-stop (vs travel where the only time I had content was when I was actively traveling).
