We were lucky to catch up with Wykin Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wykin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I believe in order to achieve success, it’s crucial to build a strong team. This begins by connecting with like-minded individuals who share similar passions and mindsets. During a presentation, a motivational speaker posed a question to the audience: “How big would you dream if you knew you couldn’t fail?” This question deeply resonated with me, prompting a profound introspection. Consequently, I began to explore innovative methods to redefine my career path and transcend the limitations of my existing circumstances. This began with starting my agency and working with my friends on various projects. Personally, at Saint Rose Agency, I often hire close friends for various events, performances, and projects. Having known them personally for so long, I can discern who I can rely on in any creative setting. Those who consistently contribute to projects and approach their work seriously take the forefront of Saint Rose Agency. Recognizing that a creative agency is in the people business, it’s our members that matter the most not the company. Maintaining genuine relationships amongst a vast network creative professionals is very important. In order to be the best leader possible I maintain transparency in our business model, aiming to place individuals where they can thrive, taking the time to listen, and coordinate with my team throughout the process. Success for me involves creating opportunities for yourself and those around you. It’s about assisting friends, letting them shine, and supporting their career growth. Success is the collective achievement of aspirations amongst friends, despite failures or setbacks. Therefore my greatest success in life will be building table that allowed my friends to eat with me side-by-side.
Back in 2019 when I first started Saint Rose Agency. I was just a kid with a dream. At the time I was working as a creative director for two different companies and I felt extremely undervalued. Recognizing the need to prioritize my ambitions, I decided to establish something entirely my own from the ground up. Transitioning from solo endeavors, I cultivated a team pivotal in executing numerous creative projects. Collaborating with both emerging and established artists, many of whom have become cherished friends. The success we achieved was an inevitable byproduct of our collective efforts. My own personal creative journey was birthed through the passing of my father. I gave myself an ultimatum and chose to better my circumstance by believing in my capabilities as an artist. From then on my goal was to discover and support the creative community around me. Saint Rose Agency is a family, not a business, and we make timeless art with our friends. That to me is what true success looks like.
Wykin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Wykin Harris Jr. I’m a Creative Director and multidisciplinary artist. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to be a full-time creative and do something I love every day. The money and success are byproducts of my passion. What inspires me is the act of creation and pushing the limits of my creativity. There’s no greater feeling than putting all your time and energy into a project, and your clients loving the end results. Despite the stress and anxiety, it’s worth it when you get to do what you love. I seldom feel like I’m working; I enjoy it too much.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Back in 2017, fresh out of high school, I started modeling due to my best friend’s interest in photography at the time. We formed a collective called Alta Modello and consistently posted to our socials. This led me to land my first real modeling gig with Coca-Cola and then Converse a couple of months later. From 2017-2018, I had moderate success in the modeling industry, and at the time, I thought this was ultimately going to be my career path. However, on October 13th, 2018, my father would be driving back from Vegas with his soon-to-be fiancée, and tragedy would strike. My father was a Fire Captain and spent most of his life fighting fires throughout my childhood. He was known for his kindness, compassion, and willingness to help anyone no matter the situation. That night, there was a severe crash on the freeway, and my father, being a firefighter and first responder, pulled over to assess the situation. He rescued two people that night before he died but was unfortunately struck by a drunk driver in the emergency lane saving the last person’s life. He died a hero, and his selfless actions saved multiple lives that night. But for me, my hero and father were gone, and that was a brutal and devastating pain for me to experience at 19. In the aftermath of his passing and in the midst of my grief and depression, I discovered photography. I was given an outlet for my frustration, grief, and remarkably was able to start my own company at 19. Saint Rose Agency was the table I built to ensure I could collaborate with my friends, family, and manifest opportunities we could eat from together as artists. My goal from that point on was to work for myself and develop my own agency. Fortunately, over the last six years, I’ve had the opportunity to be a creative director for numerous brands and businesses, even landing a part-time position with FootAction and getting to work on creative campaigns for the likes of Nike and ASICS. My passion for photography kept me pushing the envelope and bounds of possibility. I fell deeply in love with the process of creation. I’ve worn many hats throughout my career as a creative director, and I can truly say photography saved my life. I don’t think I would be the man I am today had I not picked up a camera and given myself the opportunity to prove that, no matter how many times life knocks me down, I have the strength to pick myself up and keep moving forward with my head held high. Or in the words of my father “It’s small shit to us giants.” Tomorrow is not promised so seize the day!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding part of being a creative is all the friends you get to make when you let go of the idea of constantly needing to be in competition with everyone and focus more on effortless collaboration. Focusing more on how you’re trying to flow with your team and work in unison with a diverse cast of professionals. It takes teamwork, coordination, and genuine friendships. No matter what I’m doing, I’m always reachable; my objectives cannot supersede the collective mind of creation. When we create, we treat it like a gift to God. Give it everything you have, create with passion, experience, and from within your own divine nature. If you follow those steps, the stories you tell and moments you capture will far surpass your wildest imaginations. To me, the reward of being creative is pure potentiality. At any time, at any moment, I have the power to survey the world around me and create something that didn’t exist until I opened my mind to the pure raw potential of the moment. Removed from judgment and fully immersed in the moment, shooting for myself and manifesting each shot with skillful precision. For me personally, photography was a big factor in overcoming the sudden loss of my father. It gave me an outlet for the pain I was harboring and also created financial opportunities for myself and those around me. I was then able to start my company and bring on a lot of my very creative and talented friends to various projects. I’ve always believed in opening spaces for creative individuals to express themselves and flourish in the divine essence of their own being. Fully being able to showcase their talents and skills while also being able to make a living. In my humble opinion, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is making the kind of tables you can eat with your friends at. Cultivating a community supportive and progressive thinkers ready to embark on another creative adventure. That to me is what Saint Rose Agency stands for.
