We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Windell Dobson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Windell, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
When creating colorist artwork, people always pointed out faces in my pieces. I felt like the universe was showing me a new path, so I created “Faces de Series.” It’s a series of abstract faces with different expressions that engage people and evoke emotions.
Windell, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Art is life in its purest form – this sums up my approach to creativity. I began my craft at the tender age of 14 when I sold my first abstract painting. From my home country of Jamaica to starting my college journey and life in America at 18, I experienced and learned a lot over the years that shaped who I am today. I pride myself on creating authentic and original pieces that evoke emotion. And I’m constantly innovating so my art engages and appeals to many art lovers.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I see things from a different angle and more openly – whether it’s people or things. And I feel immense joy when people share how my art affects them emotionally.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I transformed my colorist artist approach into a minimalist style, which affected my life professionally and personally in a good way. I attracted a different audience for my artwork. And embracing the idea of using neutral colors helped me to understand the power of less is more.
