We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wilson McKay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Wilson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
To date the most meaningful project I have worked on has been the WilSun project. Which is an electronic dance music project based around Drum and Bass mixed with the deeper UK/London style of Dubstep that I started at the end of 2022. Being a fan of both styles of music I wanted to hone in on combining them. The drive behind pursuing this as a potential career is that I am honestly following in my father’s footsteps in some ways. He passed away in the spring of 2021 and I like to think he would be proud of what I am doing.
I am very thrilled to be where I am currently in this creative space. The friends I have made along the way are amazing and supportive, and I am really enjoying the ride. Thank you for the opportunity to share my story.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So where to start? I started messing around with electronic music around 2011 after listening to it through my late teens some into my 20’s. Working at Guitar Center during this time I had access to software and discounts so I always had a way to create in some way. I had a liking to Dubstep, DnB, and Trap etc at the time and experimented for years until I finally found home in Drum and Bass around 2020. After tuning my production into Drum and Bass I released my first song under WilSun called Doin’ the Most in December 2022 with Lost Space Records.
Working with several local collectives like Atlanta DnB, Beet Ranch, and currently under management of Cult-ure Collective I feel like I have found my sound and have compiled a EP which I hope to release later this year. You can find my current releases on Spotify or any major streaming service.
I aim to help push the genre of music that I have a deep love for in the most positive way by creating a community of like minded individuals who just want to have a safe good time while dancing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me being a musician is that feeling openness of sharing something you created with people who you don’t know. Then watching them react in a positive way is what it is all about for me. Electronic music producers of all levels spend a lot of time working on their music. Sharing that creation is really special.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to create and share my version of electronic music that makes you feel. The genre may change at times but the feeling with be there. Drum and Bass holds a special place in my heart and I hope to share that with my friends old, new, and forthcoming.
