We were lucky to catch up with Wilson Malek recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wilson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I discovered my love for music during my teenage years.. I remember watching bands like Green Day and being completely drawn in by their performances. I would spend hours in my room, strumming my guitar, dreaming of one day performing with the same energy and passion that they did. Those moments were pivotal, as they planted the seed for my love of music.
Fast forward to 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to sit in on a production session with Alain Gebara and iDiaz at dB Studios. It was during that session that I heard the beat for “Num.” I was immediately drawn in; the beat was mesmerizing, and I realized at that moment that I wanted to become a producer. I didn’t know where this path would take me, but I was determined to become good enough to create something as spectacular as that beat.
After a few years of gaining experience as a music producer and navigating through the industry, I co-founded Sub Tropic Records. with Dustin Breeden. In a truly full-circle moment, we signed iDiaz and released the song “Num,” the very track that had inspired my passion for music production. It was a significant milestone in my journey, reaffirming my decision to pursue this creative path.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Wilson Malek, a music producer, artist, and entrepreneur based in South Florida. My journey into the music industry is deeply rooted in my heritage, as I come from a family of Lebanese-Assyrian immigrants. Growing up, music was always a significant part of my life, and I spent years playing in bands before transitioning into music production.
For over five years, I have honed my skills as a music producer, working with various artists and genres. My professional background in social media management and marketing has also played a crucial role in my career, allowing me to understand the importance of building a strong online presence and connecting with audiences in meaningful ways.
In 2022, I co-founded Sub Tropic Records, an indie label based in South Florida, alongside Dustin Breeden from dB Studios. At Sub Tropic Records, we specialize in artist development, working across various genres to nurture and promote emerging talent. What sets us apart is the care and dedication we put into our artists. We don’t just sign talent; we help them build from the ground up, setting a strong foundation for their careers and providing them with the tools and support they need to succeed in the industry.
At Sub Tropic Records, our mission is to empower artists. We believe in their potential and are dedicated to helping them achieve their dreams. For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that our work is driven by a genuine passion for music and a commitment to excellence. We are here to make a difference in the lives of the artists we work with and to contribute positively to the music industry as a whole.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media has been a journey shaped by both my professional experiences and personal creativity. In the past, I’ve been fortunate enough to manage social networks with over 8.5 million followers, where I helped grow and engage large communities. This experience taught me the fundamentals of social media management and the importance of understanding your audience.
For my own social media channels, I found success by creating remixes of popular songs. These remixes not only showcased my production but also tapped into the existing fanbases of those artists, drawing attention to my content.
My biggest piece of advice for those just starting to build their social media presence is to always put yourself in the shoes of the viewer. While people are mindlessly scrolling through their feeds, you need to think about what you can do to make them stop and engage with your content. Ask yourself: What hook can you use? Is your content worth stopping for? Continuously refine your approach based on these questions. Remember, it’s all about making that connection and standing out in a sea of content.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people enjoy the music I’ve spent countless nights in the studio working on. There’s an incredible sense of fulfillment in knowing that the emotions and experiences I poured into a track resonate with others.
