We were lucky to catch up with Willy Flee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Willy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It all happened when I was 16. It was my first time smoking weed, and my cousin was a dj…after we smoked, we went back to his place and he threw on some beats…and I started to freestyle. And I mean, I’ve always loved music. Grew up in it and around it…but after I was done, he actually recorded me and put it on a CD, he told me I should take it serious and pursue it. And after I was done with HS and my hoop dreams were finished, I took it to the lab and now I’m here.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The name is Willy Flee, from Brooklyn New York, Canarsie to be exact! The floss. West Indian background. Very musically inclined family. A hungry multi genre artists ready to take the world by storm.
Flee got into music simply just off the love for it. Having certain dance talents growing up and always having a knack for learning new moves and lyrics to songs very fast, it was pretty easy to actually start creating music.
To learn HOW to make it and create it properly took steps.
Self taught, sound engineer , video production and more, so he can legit do it all himself.
Going from Walmart mics to building house studios using pro tools, the evolving has been happening year in and out.
So getting into it wasn’t hard. Actually learning how to perfect it, was the goal.
What I provide? I produce good energy and vibes. My music can take you to the islands, to the bedroom or to the streets or to the club or parties. Very versatile catalog.
For all music artists out there I also provide mixing and mastering services on audio recordings.
What I feel sets me apart from others is the fact I have a deep bag.
As I said I feel I can please the street listener, the soft rnb listener, the up in the club listener, the with your partner listener. Etc. I’m like an ice cream shop. I can provide all sorts of flavors. Plus I have a dance bag as well that I feel I compete with the best of them.
I’m most proud of, where I am today. The grind isn’t easy and manyyyyyy give up. But I refuse to. So much money and time has gone into this I’ll have to pass away to give this up. Period.
I’m proud of my adversity. I used to want so much, now I take what’s given and I accept it gratefully.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Marketing!!!!! No debate about it.
I used to just drop music on SoundCloud or upload to tunecore and feel like Diddy was gonna see it the next day and I’d get the call. But little did I know how much money is actually need to get heard.
Building core fans is cool. Being able to invest in yourself to gain more is the key
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Simply, my daughter. She’s the shining light that wakes me up everyday to keep at it. I want to make sure she doesn’t have to work for anyone but herself. That’s my overall life goal.
And to be named with the goats of the game. Period.
