We recently connected with William Whetstone and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, William thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I wouldn’t say that there is a specific project that has been the most meaningful so far, but the particular style that has been the most meaningful is boudoir. This style can leave clients feeling vulnerable. Therefore, I prioritize each client’s safety and comfort. I’ve encouraged clients to bring a friend or partner as they can be some of the biggest supporters. Helping clients feel at ease is a top priority for me. I want to make sure the experience is enjoyable.
After the final photo has been taken, we’ll sit down and look through the photos together. Seeing clients’ eyes light up when they see their images is so rewarding. I can see them sit a little taller and feel a sense of power that they haven’t felt before. The ability to help people grow their confidence is such a privilege. Especially in a world where unrealistic beauty expectations are everywhere we look.
William, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a photographer in the San Antonio, TX, area. I specialize in boudoir photography, but I don’t limit myself to one specific niche. Instead, I like to get myself into as many interesting situations as possible. I’ve worked with multiple Minor League Baseball teams and photographed many military ceremonies. I have clients who have asked for things I’ve never done before, and I’m always up for a challenge. I love creating art in any way possible, so if you have a vision and are in the area, let’s make art together!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I had mentioned that there are so many unrealistic beauty standards, and my goal is to make my clients see that they exceed those artificial standards. I do not alter any parts of the clients’ bodies; the most I will do is remove a bruise, cut, or pimple. Things that are permanent parts of their body, like birthmarks and scars, I don’t touch. Those are the things that make my clients who they are. Showcasing their natural beauty is a constant goal of mine.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My clientele has grown organically through word of mouth and connections with friends. I have been happy with this because I already have some sense of connection with new clients, and working together flows smoothly. Fortunately, I am not in a position where I feel like I need to grow my client base very quickly.
