We caught up with the brilliant and insightful William Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, William thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Our mission holds a strong purpose for anyone involved. Not only are we giving back but we are helping a lot of people discover who they truly are. We’ve gotten testimonials about that from so many artist and that’s including me. When it comes to the reason why we do what we do, so many lose sight of that or have the wrong idea on exactly what that is. Here at 450 we are just a mirror to where you might be in life and point you in the right direction to where you want to go with it. We teach intention through the frequencies we create everyday.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I use to be a rapper who would describe himself as another “starving artist’ struggling to make financial abundance off of the craft alone. I was always around likeminded artist as well and grew sick of that description. One day I eventually started looking at other businesses that thrived off exploitation of this description. It was like these agencies, record labels, and talent scouts would make money off so many artist but not truly help them. That’s where I wanted to make and establish that difference. To make a real change there has to be something supplementary for all involved besides money. I wanted to provide a service that gives true meaning that the artist can utilize and take with them everywhere. The reason so many artist fail at being a well fed successful artist is because the business side is kind of frowned up on. So many don’t want to learn about the schematics of what value is and how to translate that into a business practice. We are here to be that exemplar of what that can be. To learn yourself is an everyday practice and we believe you can learn that through the passions you channel working with us whether it’s through our workshops, open mics, monthly events etc. I’m proud of our community because when I first came to Phoenix I felt like everyone just wanted to be apart of something. To be received like we have is a pure blessing. I’ve never felt anything close to this kind of love that we get from simply showing that we care and support artist of all kinds. We all need eachother and it takes a village.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Something I had to unlearn was that the art can take care of everything. I grew up watching my fav idols on tv thinking that all they had to do was show up and collect check. It’s so much more behind the scenes that no one pays attention to. It took me a while to learn what I know now and I know I’m nowhere near done learning what I need to to thrive how I want. Business is tricky especially in the Artist world but I grew to love it. So many limitless ways to do this it’s almost like success is inevitable.
Any advice for managing a team?
We are all human, we are all trying, and we can all use a bit of grace when it comes to being in sync. Let people do what they’re good at vs what you want them to be good at. Communication saves a nation of you can’t tell eachother to step it up and hold people accountable for appropriate correction you will fail before you can truly begin.
