We caught up with the brilliant and insightful William Stilwell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
William, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you have a hero? What have you learned from them?
My hero was my Father. When I first became interested in starting my business he was nothing less than supportive. He allowed me a small portion of our family home to operate out of and always pushed my artistry. He inspired me to continue chasing my dreams and helped me find my passion. Plus, he showed me exactly what it meant to be hardworking, even with the odds stacked against you. My Dad was diagnosed with acute kidney failure while I was still in high school. The day I graduated he was admitted to a local hospital and unable to attend. His life changed, he had new dietary requirements and health regimens, but, he still got up each and every day to help provide for me so I could do what I loved.
William, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My Mother was a singer in church my entire life, I remember countless times going to see her sing in places and studios growing up. This is where a lot of my studio interest came from, as well as the drive to create my own music. While in high school I purchased the equipment to produce/record and began having people record for an affordable price. I began teaching myself along side my friends how to mix and master/ produce, and as time has gone on I’ve had the pleasure of working with over 250+ local, North Carolina, artists & producers. My main goal when I’m working with a client is to bring something valuable to the table, I aspire to improve and help develop the creatives surrounding me, while also opening a comfortable environment for those to think freely.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think that social media is a great source for gaining reputability when starting up a business. Using your platform to showcase previous works and connect with new customers is vital when first starting. Another big part is the word of mouth, you want to give your clients a reason to come back, an impression that makes them go to their friends and refer you over the competition.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Theres been plenty of times when Ive felt like loosing it all. My fathers passing, Financial struggles, Equipment malfunctions, the list goes on. You just can’t let it stop your mindset, you have be strong minded and remind yourself that the toughest battles are made for the strongest soldiers. It’s all about mental, take time for yourself and rest, you have to know your working capacity/value an \d when to say enough is enough.
