We were lucky to catch up with William Perryman recently and have shared our conversation below.
William, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken recently would have to be starting the 52 in 52 song challenge this year. Basically, the challenge is you have to release 52 songs in 52 weeks. I’ve elected to drop a new song every Wednesday for the entire year. I’m dubbing them Wednesday with Will. Currently I’m 9 weeks into the year and I’ve released 9 songs with 3 of them being originals and 6 of them being remixes. So far I’ve released more music this year than I have in the past 3 years combined, which feels incredible and scary at the same time. To be honest, the main reason I started this challenge was to get over the constant feeling of needing a song to be perfect before it’s released. For a while now I’ve been so caught up in chasing down perfectionism that I lost track of the kind of music I wanted to make in the first place. Truly, I just want to make music that makes people happy. After just 9 weeks of releasing a song a week, I can say that without a doubt I’ve made a lot of progress on defeating that perfectionism monster. While I know I still have a long way to go, I’m so grateful for the growth I’ve already seen in the project. Thankfully, I haven’t had to walk this path alone as I joined a group with about 10 other producers who’ve all decided to take on this crazy challenge. They’ve all been my absolute rock so far this year and encouraged me at so many points. It’s honestly beautiful seeing the power of each other lifting one another up when someone is having a hard time with a track or even just life. Also, have to give a huge shoutout to the artist Goshfather for inspiring this idea in the first place as he took on the challenge last year. He also joined the group with us this year and has been unloading an absolute goldmine of advice on every topic you could think of when it comes to being an artist.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, my name is William Perryman and my artist name is “Bud And The Night”. I’m a Nashville-based producer and songwriter who has about 10 years of experience making music. I was born and raised in the small town of Newport, Tennessee just a few miles west of the Smoky Mountains National Park. I grew up playing piano and guitar while I also had a great love for all things outdoors. My current influences have to be Odesza, Inzo, and Fred Again… but when I was growing up I was heavily inspired by Avicii, Skrillex, and Daft Punk. I primarily make a few different genres of electronic dance music which mostly involve house, ukg, dnb, and bass. My mission is to create a beautiful world with which I can tell its story with my music.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
While traveling in the summer of 2021, I had my backpack stolen with my laptop and external hard drive in it. At the time I was absolutely crushed and I couldn’t even imagine trying to start over. I had every song I had ever made plus a body of work I had just finished up a few weeks before on it. In that moment I felt like giving up and deciding maybe I wasn’t cut out for this. Once I finally got a moment to sit down alone, it hit me that I couldn’t give up and that I had to keep going. While I wasn’t able to recover all the projects, I was able to recover the songs from the 6 track EP on an old email and I decided to call the project “From Ashes”. I did so as a way to pay homage to resilience in the face of adversity. Looking back I’m damn proud I didn’t give up and I’ve made better music than I could have ever imagined 4 years ago! Always keep going no matter the obstacle!

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
One of the absolute best tools for learning and growing as an artist has to be building a community around you with like minded individuals. They don’t all even have to be doing exactly what you’re wanting to achieve. You need to find people who carry that same sort of love and passion for life that you want for yourself. After finding a great group, you will quickly learn just how powerful it is and such a great way to find new inspiration. While the path may be difficult, it doesn’t mean you have to go alone.
