We caught up with the brilliant and insightful William Lewis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
William, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Sugar Daddy Cookies is a play off of Will and Mimi’s relationship. Will is 15 years older than Mimi! One day after days of trying to find the perfect name, Mimi came home and said, ‘William! I got it! Sugar Daddy Cookies!”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Our names are Will and Mimi and we are the owners of Sugar Daddy Cookies! We recently married and gave birth to a beautiful little girl during the pandemic. Sugar Daddy Cookies Atl started when Will decided he wanted to bake some cookies for Mimi during her pregnancy. The cookies were so good that Mimi decided to take them to work with her to allow her coworkers to try them as well. They LOVED them!
A few weeks later, after perfecting our recipes, we decided to step out on faith and start a cookie company and we have been in business since March 2021. Since then, we have tackled major festivals throughout Atlanta such as Juneteenth at Centennial Park, BeReggae, and Invest Fest to name a few.
By November of 2021, Will and Mimi were both blessed to quit their jobs in order to keep up with the demands of the company. We opened up a kiosk inside of Cumberland Mall selling prepackaged cookies and t shirts while reminding people that we are determined to take over the cookie business here here in Atlanta!
By December of this year (2022) we will have our grand opening at our newest location in the Lenox Mall Food Court!
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
One day, my friend asked me to come out to a club that he was hosting that night. I decided to go support my friend not knowing that on the other side of town, a young lady would be experiencing the same thing.
Once I’m there, I looked over and noticed this beautiful woman sitting in the corner with this huge Afro and a bright yellow dress. We made eye contact. Time went by and this woman who is brighting up the room happened to make eye contact with me again, so I decided to go over there and introduce myself.
She was sitting in a section with a lot of people and I had to get by a few people just to get to her. I sat next to her and said, “Hi! My name is Will! What’s yours?” I helps my hand out fir her to shake.
“Nice to meet you Will! I’m Mimi!” She replied. We exchanged contact information and later on that week we went on our last first date ever!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
One of our friends invited us to sell cookies in little Five Points. This was our first event ever. I told my wife. Mimi, that we should bake mini cookies and give them away for free for an exchange of a follow on social media. That worked like a charm!
While there, we also asked customers if we could record their first bite and we named it our Sugar Baby Taste Test. Everyone who tried the cookies absolutely loved them! We then post our taste test on social media and soon we had so many people from all over purchase cookies off our website because they wanted to see what all the hype was about. We even had an order all the way from Asia!
