We caught up with the brilliant and insightful William Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello my name is William, I am a Navy Veteran and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I grew up in Minden Louisiana/ Mccomb MS, as a youth I didn’t realize all of the opportunities that were available due to the state of education at the time. I knew I wanted to over come poverty and be the first one in my family to-graduate so I decided to enlist in the Navy Reserve to help pay for college. Shortly after joining the reserve I was deployed to Afghanistan where I was able to help defend our country. Upon returning I finished nursing school and began to work in the Intensive Care Unit at Mayo Clinic. Realizing I wanted to keep going I decided I would use my skills to provide opportunities to other people who come from underserved areas. I decided I would launch an educational business, in 2019. We have since added a Vocational School where we have fought to get funds to provide opportunities to individuals in need. Currently we are working with multiple organizations to get individuals trained in occupations such as Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, Nurse Aide, and more. I am most proud of the fact that we are doing things to impact our community.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
We launched a brand in 2019, shortly after Covid hit and we were forced to pivot our business model. Many organizations switched to virtual type trainings or canceled classes. At the time our main courses were OSHA trainings and CPR. We were able to push through and refocus on adding the Vocational School. In 2021 we received our final approval and we were able to launch the school. Establishing a business/ brand is hard work but maintaining your focus and will through tough times will make all the difference.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Running a business can be very expensive, your overhead will make or break your business. For us, we decided that we would self fund our operations. I worked 5-7 days a week as a nurse to help fund my business. Currently we do not have any loans, we only have credit cards for purchases. We also did not use investors, its all self funded. There are many ways to fund your business but I believed reducing debt and over head was the best way for us.
