We caught up with the brilliant and insightful William Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, William thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I will say the most meaningful project I worked on so far is probably the one I’m working on now which is a photo book of my hometown Columbus, Ohio it’s giving me a reason to get out and shoot photos of my hometown in a different light than what I’m use to and gives me a better appreciation of the city I grew up in.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is William Harris Im 22 years old and I am a Portrait , event and street Photographer I started photography when I was 14 years old when my grandpa and my aunt bought me a hp point shoot camera for Christmas and ever since a passion for photography was ignited and I’ve been shooting ever since. My goal When I take photos for a client is not only so they have photos to post or print even though having that doesn’t hurt Its to capture the emotions and memories that will be solidified for years to come. whenever you book with me or follow me you immediately become a part of my family capturing your moments that will be remembered for years will be done the same as if you were my mom, dad , or sisters and I was capturing my own family memories.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing your creative vision come to life For example when I go out with a clear idea of how I want the photos to look whether that be me going and shooting street photo sets or an events or portrait session and it turns out the exact way you had envisioned it there’s no better rewarding feeling that I have found yet.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have been Doing Photography since I was 14 y/o and in 2020 I had lost all my clients which during the height of the pandemic everybody was basically sent home or laid off which in my case all my clients cancelled there sessions and it left me with no clients and no income it was a very stressful time of my life luckily I was still able to make ends meet but I had to really reevaluate why I was doing photography and I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t doing it for financial reasons but I was doing it because I have a general love for photography and the emotions I can express through it and so I had to pivot in the sense of changing my mentality and I spent the rest of the year just learning the craft and allowing my self to spend the time and perfect my craft and I still have a lot to learn but making that mentality change early on really helped me as a person and as an artist.
