We recently connected with William Gross and have shared our conversation below.

William, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.

I would say Universally Unknown as an agency really puts the artists first instead of money in my pocket which is very different than how most managers and agencies flow, I only support artists that I want to listen too or would have their artwork on my own walls why do I want to push artist’s forward that aren’t innovative and take chances and in the end I enjoy because they are nothing but family at the end of the day.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

My name is William Gross but all friends, family and anyone who really knows me including local chef’s and club bouncers in LA just call me Billy. I have worked in all different industries from Wall Street to being a music promoter and even a golf caddie not much I haven’t done. I have lived from Aspen to the Phillipines and everywhere in between.

Art and music have always moved me and from a young age no matter what I was dealing with and any turmoil in my life or with my family I could always put a record on and look at some art and it would all go away. Closest thing to being in the ocean and surfing a truly calming effect.

From a point of realizing how many musicians and artists were either getting screwed financially or to talented to be on the sideline I wanted to bring them to the forefront, hence the name of my agency Universally Unknown.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

So I am a little different then most after having over 50 jobs and hating being micro managed I knew I had to do things my way so I quit my marketing job in downtown LA with a check of a little over a grand to be paid out and around 6 bucks to my name.

All I can say is now 6 years later and still never taking any outside capital where there is a will there is a way.
