We recently connected with Will Simpson and have shared our conversation below.
Will, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I really enjoy doing anything that helps our community creative spark show. Working with different Cities doing kid zones and introducing our youth to art has been a joy of mine. The reaction on the kids faces to what they’ve created and watching them in their creative space is amazing to see.
Will, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been really focused on community work as of late. Providing paint parties, kids zones, and art based curriculums for the youth. I got into this because of my love to create and curiosity. I use to look at paintings and murals amazed how such a thing could be created. One thing to know about my work/brand is that it will always come from a place of self elevation. I like to ignite thought and reflection from a visual aspect. In that I am most proud of because any artist can make something look good but to have someone thinking and reflecting on life itself is what set me apart as an artist.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to create art throughout my communities so that the youth in those communities can see themselves as large as a painting on the side of a building and as colorful as the personalities they hold inside. If we had more representation in our communities like our faces on walls, more vibrant colors giving off positive energy and Affirmation that ignite thought. I believe our people would get that spark and drive to push forward to be the best version of themselves.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
We must encourage, support financially, and share what our creative’s are doing. You may not be able to do all three but in doing one of these I am a witness that the other two aren’t far behind. I’ve gotten so many jobs off someone just sharing my art on their page. One of the things that blessed me the most wasn’t even money. It was the time I was doing a mural off Sistrunk Blvd and people was driving by blowing their horns some even pulled over just to say I was doing an amazing job. I’m in what some would call the hood and to get such encouragement from my peers was a blessing.
