We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful WILL MORELAND. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with WILL below.
WILL, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I most definitely am happier as a business owner. Even though it has it’s challenges, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world. I’m hard wired to be a business owner and entrepreneur. Whenever I think being a business owner is tough, I think about my days working in an office. I felt like a fish out of water. It just wasn’t for me. And that’s an important key to happiness, you have to find what works for you.
There have been many times, when I thought my business wasn’t going to make it and wouldn’t be able to sustain me or my family. In these moments of despair, I thought about finding a job. Each time I would have to remind myself, I wasn’t the first person to face this dilemma. The answer to my problem was out there. I just needed to connect with the person who had my answer.
I would take long walks and give myself space to hear the answer. Usually on these clarity walks as I call them, the person or answer would come to me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
To make a long story short. I’m originally from Compton, Ca. After a year of college, I joined the Army. My first duty station was in Germany. During my time in the Army, I got heavily into reading personal development books and listening to motivational speakers like Les Brown, Zig Ziglar and Jim Rohn. I read over 1000 books and listened to countless audio tapes in a 7 year period. This lit my fire around personal development. I saw how my mind was different. How my habits were different. And eventually, how my results were different.
I knew I wanted to assist other people with their transformation to becoming their best self. I wasn’t sure just how I was going to do it, but I knew this is what I wanted to do. A short time after leaving the Army, I started my consulting company. That was 21 years ago.
The company has grown and expanded over the years with the services we provide. In the early years, we focused on Leadership Development. Now we offer Executive Coaching, Employee Development, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training.
We are the industry leaders in guiding companies in creating company cultures that empower employees and allow them to express their best selves.
I would say the unique thing about our company is that we treat each client individually, we don’t use a cookie cutter approach in our trainings. Each company dynamic is different, so we take the time to create the best solution for each company.
I am most proud of the feed back from our clients. When they update us and let us know that the trainings have helped their teams operate more effectively and cohesively, that’s the win for us.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Like every business over the last two years, we had to pivot during the pandemic. The maturity of our business was going out to companies and training them. When the pandemic hit, we were not able to have face to face meetings or conferences. In 2020 100% of our clients wanted to cancel trainings and events.
We quickly had to think of a solution to serve our clients. The trainings were still needed, we just needed to figure out how to deliver them. Our company was an early adopter to using platforms like Zoom. Many of our clients were not use to using this platform. So in addition to conducting our regular trainings, we included special trainings on how to implement Zoom into their company culture.
Our ability to pivot and adapt to change quickly allowed us to recoup 87% of our contracts that year. Our clients were willing to have the trainings done via Zoom.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media has been a wonderful tool for us to use to reach our ideal clients. I realized early on that social media was a new form of reaching a wider audience. I determined in the beginning I was going to provide relevant content to my clients and potential clients via social media. In the early days it was just Facebook and Twitter. Now we have so many platforms you can use to get your message out.
If you are just starting out, I would say, get crystal clear on who your audience is. Choose which platform you will use to mainly communicate with them. The key is being consistent, showing up. It doesn’t matter if it’s once a week or three times a week, be consistent.
Don’t pay attention to the likes, follows, etc. Focus on providing good information that will serve your potential clients and current clients. The numbers will build over time. What you will earn through consistency is what I call “Market Confidence.” Through your continual effort to show up, people will begin to know, like and trust you.
