We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Will Mims a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Will, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I took a risk starting Legend Gear, the first soccer apparel company that was the predecessor to Golazo. I was training kids privately in the DFW metroplex as I was transitioning out of pursuing soccer at the professional level, and also designing a social good company that donated soccer gear for each shirt sold. Fast forward to today, the Golazo Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity that has distributed over 2,200 pieces of soccer gear! Beautifulgoals.org is our new web address. Pursuing soccer professionally, I received preseason invites from the Charleston Battery, and also spent time with FC Giessan, a professional club near Frankfurt, Germany. I also played in the Lisbon, Portugal area. These are relatively big risks because I had graduated Magna Cum Laude and done well in my studies as a Psychology major at Adams State University in Colorado. I am grateful for all of the winding roads that being an entrepreneur has led, and it has been very valuable in terms of life experience. Professional players from previous World Cups have supported the Golazo Foundation. Our charity continues to grow, so it has turned out well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am from Arlington, Texas. I grew up playing soccer, and that one of my favorite past times. Soccer certainly is a passion of me. I went on to play soccer at Adams State University in Colorado where I was one of the captains. I received several opportunities to play at the professional level after.
I can remember my sister and I doing collages with magazine articles and poster boards; so, that might be where some of my creative energy has arisen. When I started beautifulgoals.org we were fundraising with shirts to help donate soccer gear to underprivileged kids in subsidized apartments. Many of them came from refugee backgrounds. We were fortunate enough to be featured on NBC 5’s early morning show several years back with Laura Harris. Being the feature story for the two morning segments that day helped us gain momentum, and awareness for our charity. I am very excited that we have donated over 2,200 pieces of soccer gear to kids in about 3 years. The main thing I would like people to know about the Golazo Foundation is that we have a wonderful mission in donating soccer gear to children from at-risk backgrounds.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Beautifulgoals.org started relatively soon before the corona virus started spreading. This was a challenging time to fundraise to help our kids; however, we persevered and are still going strong.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To help as many people as possible.
