Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Will Lovell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Will, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on in regard to my musical background is the completion of my first album. For many years of my life, it has been a dream to see music that I have written on streaming platforms/CDs. When selecting a college to attend four years ago, I wanted to go somewhere that would give me the opportunity to not only improve as a songwriter, but also provide the opportunity to record the songs I write. That ultimately lead me to Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. During my senior year, I was blessed with the opportunity to record 13 songs that I had written, while learning how to play new instruments and how to work in music production. While working on this project, I also was able to thoroughly enjoy the recording process with my friends, as many of them played instruments on the album that I could not play. Hearing each song that I had originally written on my guitar, with many other instruments added, was a dream come true! I decided to call the album “Along the Way” which is the name of the 12th track on the record. This name provides the essence of the project, as all of the songs were written at different points in my life over the past 5-6 years. I sing about different experiences I have had (both good and bad), as well as some fictitious tales I wrote along the way.

Will, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a singer/songwriter from Bowling Green, Kentucky. I originally began singing in the fourth grade shortly after Whitney Houston died. I was fascinated with her rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, and ultimately decided to sing it at my elementary school talent show. With much help from my dad (he had been singing for many years), I finally was able to stay on pitch well enough to sing in public. After this, I continued to work on my music while growing up and learned guitar in high school. Having a bass voice, I was very disappointed that I could not sing all of the pop songs that were trending at the time. However, during my freshman year, I discovered Johnny Cash. Not only could I sing his songs, but I could also easily learn how to play guitar for these songs (most of them were only three chords). Furthermore, I was intrigued by the fact that Cash wrote most of his music. As a result, I became interested in other songwriters like The Beatles, Jim Croce, Bob Dylan, and other amazing creators. This led me to writing songs myself, and I have been writing new songs ever since in order to improve upon my craft (writing more complex melodies with deeper lyrics).
Another interesting aspect of Johnny Cash that intrigued me was his deep faith in God. After reading two of his books, I decided to begin reading the Bible and put my faith in Jesus Christ. This development of my faith led me to the mission for all of my music, which is to write songs that are meaningful and that help people. Some songs are sad, and some are happy, but they all provide music to listen to that is empathetic to emotions people feel every day. I want to help people feel closer to God, and I hope that my music does this.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that illustrates my resilience is my struggle with depression a little less than two years ago. My junior year of college, I began having panic attacks and extreme negative thoughts about myself. Mentally, I felt like I was in a deep whole that was impossible to climb out of. Throughout this, I leaned heavily on my fiancé (then girlfriend) and my family. Throughout this struggle, I was attending classes, working on music, and also running cross country for my college. I do not know if the busyness helped or hindered my mental health, but I do know that I thought about giving up. However, after getting more help from counselors on campus as well as continued support from my friends and family, I slowly began attempting to feed my mind positive thoughts and to change my way of thinking. I decided to not give up and to improve my mental health. Today, I am the strongest I have ever been mentally in my life and am so thankful to be here.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is seeing people enjoy your music. Whenever I would play at school, it was a thrill to see people in the audience smiling while mouthing the words to a song I had written. That has been a dream of mine throughout my life, and I experienced a taste of it recently after the release of my album. I want to write songs that bring joy to listeners of my music, and seeing a positive response from the audience makes me happy as well.
