We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Will Jordan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Will below.
Will, appreciate you joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I was one of my most unexpected problems. My comfort zone and mentality challenged my creativity at times and discouraged me from sharing my work and creative process. This was an unexpected challenge because I was always focused on creating and thought things like discipline and consistency would be enough. As time went on I noticed patterns within myself like fear of being seen, judged, and connecting with people. My creativity was being hindered so I started identifying my challenges and taking small steps toward solving them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Will Jordan and I’m an abstract artist. I’ve enjoyed using art and creativity as means of expression since my childhood. Acrylic and oil paint are my primary mediums when creating but I also enjoy photography, digital art and design.
I appreciate the creative ways a message can be conveyed without hindrance from social barriers and how art has continued to do so throughout time. I decided to study art at Hampton University until I graduated in 2019. Immediately after I joined the d’Art Center in Norfolk, Virginia as an Associate artist and started social media pages to promote my work. My paintings combine line and form to create images that challenge the viewers perception.
I think my art helps build bridges of understanding between people by using perspective to explore themes that I predominantly see. I believe that using challenges and experiences from my own journey along with observation from people and society makes my art more relatable and encourages people to focus more on what we have in common instead of remaining divided.
I’m most proud of how I’ve used growth and experience as themes in my art and seeing how it’s been a relationship that I am more comfortable sharing after going years without doing so. I recently had an old classmate and friend reach out to me and share how my art and transparency has impacted and encouraged him through his own life challenges and creative journey.
I’d like for my supporters and people in general to understand that being in a situation where you’re unsure is okay. Having access to different perspectives and new ideas is something we get to experience in our own lifetime and shouldn’t be feared. There is a lesson in every challenge that will ultimately lead to our progress once new ideas and perspectives have been fully embraced. I’m excited to know and share that there’s beauty in the unknown and growth once you step outside of familiar cycles. Choosing to let go opens you up to receive more.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Creating images that explore and share perspectives and experiences as well as the impact they have has been my current focus with art. This also reveals what we may not always see or be aware of while being more mindful of their impact. Using concepts of observation and perspective as a main theme of my art allows me to create flexibly and cater to current circumstances while making it relate to others.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Exploring myself. I know myself more than I knew was possible which consequently exposes how much I don’t know. The same exploration has altered how I view situations and people. I have more patience and the ability to see more than what meets the eye and I also feel like my capacity for knowledge understanding and love has deepened. This is reflected in other areas of life and in the work I create.
