We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Will Heck. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Will below.
Hi Will, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Growing up I was influenced by my family members and funny enough I tried to avoid pursuing any type of music related career. Eventually, I realized it’s something I’m truly passionate about and I feel I’m halfway decent at it.
So I take the time to study other artists from the songs they put out to their performances. Continuing to build my knowledge and constantly approach my music from a different angle each time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a rapper and songwriter, and I also publish my own music under a publishing company owned by myself and a few friends of mine.
I’ve been creating progressively but have always been writing and expanding my vocabulary or finding ways to paint a picture with what I have to say.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I feel that society could be more welcoming to up and coming unknown artists who’ve proven that they have the talent, the knowledge and the eagerness to make a living from what they love. Whether it’s music or any creative avenue.
From DJ’s to promoters, the relationships these artist build (including myself) are vital to growing the network and becoming great at what you want to do.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m still learning this one, but I’d say the lesson is that everyone doesn’t deserve a piece. Some people are all take no give, or are just completely negative when it comes to whatever your goal is and will be. They’ll see the rewards, but could care less about the process and hard work it’ll take to reach that point. So the important part is to make sure you surround yourself with people you TRUST, but also make sure that you have your own back.
