We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Will Han a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Will, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
I graduated from graduate school with major in Fine Art in SUNY, specializing in oil painting. As I approached graduation, I felt lost and uncertain about my career path. Finding a teaching job in oil painting was difficult, and I wasn’t sure what other options I had. That’s when I decided to return to my undergraduate background—photography. Many of my former classmates had already started their careers in wedding photography, so it seemed like a natural path to consider.
But I had my doubts. Coming from China, I was familiar with the way wedding photography was typically done there—highly staged, unnatural, and often set in artificial dream-like scenes. The couples looked like they were performing in a scripted show rather than celebrating their love in an authentic way. This aesthetic was very different from the artistic values I had developed during my time in art school, and I worried about getting caught up in that approach.
However, things felt different in the U.S. Before graduating, a friend recommended me to a couple from their church, and I photographed their wedding for free. To this day, I still remember so many details from that wedding. It wasn’t extravagant or fancy, but there was something truly special about it. I could feel the deep connections between the couple and their guests, and I could see the genuine joy they experienced throughout the day.
During the entire shoot, I gave almost no direction. I simply followed my instincts, capturing real moments as they unfolded. Telling their story was the only thing that mattered.
After that wedding, I knew—this was the career I wanted to pursue. Wedding photography wasn’t just a job; it was a way to document love and life in the most honest and meaningful way.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
1. Personal Background
My name is Will, and I’m originally from China. I have a background in Fine Art, with both my undergraduate and graduate degrees specializing in artistic photography and oil painting.
2. Business & Services
I specialize in wedding photography, Asian pre-wedding photography, engagement photography, and portrait photography. My goal is to provide my clients with a seamless and stress-free experience. Once they entrust me with their photos, they don’t have to worry about a thing. I take care of the planning, offer guidance during the shoot, and ensure they can simply enjoy the process while I capture their moments.
3. What Sets Me Apart
I focus on natural, candid moments, capturing people in their most authentic state. My Fine Art background brings a unique artistic touch to my photography, giving my work a distinctive style and mood.
4. Achievements
Over the years, I have photographed hundreds of weddings in the U.S., working with couples from diverse cultural backgrounds around the world.
5. What I Want Clients to Know
I want my clients and followers to understand my unique photographic style. I am not a photographer who overly directs my subjects. Instead, I place couples in a space or within an experience and let their natural interactions unfold. My job is to observe and use my artistic perspective to capture those genuine, spontaneous moments.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I chose art as my major in college because of my passion for it, and I feel grateful that my work allows me to continue pursuing a career connected to that passion. Wedding photography can be repetitive, but it can also be deeply creative—it all depends on how you approach it. Creativity requires fresh thinking every time I shoot, which keeps my mind engaged and inspired.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I first started in this industry, I assumed that my cultural background meant I should work within Chinese communities to find more opportunities. I even applied for jobs at local photography companies, but I was rejected. At the time, I didn’t understand why. Later, I realized that these companies were looking for photographers whose style matched theirs. When a photographer has a unique artistic vision, it can be difficult to fit into someone else’s mold. So I quickly decided to step away from that environment.
The journey of refining my own style, making it visible, and building recognition was long and challenging. There were times when I had no stable clients or income, and the thought of switching careers or giving up crossed my mind more than once. But resilience meant pushing through those uncertainties, staying true to my vision, and continuing to create work that truly represented me.
