We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Will Gomez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Will thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If was to start all over again I would definitely hire an accountant and bookkeeper as soon as I could afford one. Keeping my books has been one of the most difficult things to do from day 1. Finding a good accountant is key to making sure your taxes are done correctly, and you are getting all of the deductions/benefits that you can. We hired a new accountant who was well versed in our industry and it has been a game changer. We also hired a bookkeeping service and all of the sudden our profit margins are better and we can keep track of projects more efficiently. My advice to those starting out as a new business owner is to make sure you have the right people in place who will help guide you.
Will, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Licensed General Contractor. As of March of this year, my wife, Leah and I co-own the company. We specialize in custom home renovations for homeowners who want to renovate their current space. We specialize in full kitchen remodels as well as full bathroom remodels. We can renovate any space inside your home and we can consult with clients on exterior projects and take on a case by case basis. We are set apart from other contractor companies because of the quality of our work and the communication we provide to our clients. We like to offer an array of real estate solutions as my wife and co-owner, Leah is a Licensed Realtor in the state of GA. We can consult on what repairs/upgrades need to be done for those thinking about selling. We can further evaluate your home to access what needs to be done. Something else that sets us apart is that we were selected to be the General Contractor for one of the teams on a competition show featured on HGTV called Flipping Showdown. Our team actually won the show!!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I originally started my business, the focus was on flipping homes for other Real Estate investors. Due to the fluctuations of the real estate market, not as many people are flipping homes and properties were much harder to come by. This lead us to re-evaluate our business model to accommodate different avenues. We started to focus more on custom kitchen and bathroom remodels for homeowners who wanted to renovate their current space. We also incorporated other vendor relations to expand our services. My wife and I were fortunate to be featured as the General Contractor for one of the teams on a competition show featured on HGTV called Flipping Showdown. That experience further led us to shift our business model and accommodate more homeowners looking to renovate their current space which has been in much higher demand.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
Funny enough my business partner is my wife. We decided that as much work as she does for the company it would only be fair for her to have 49% ownership. I’m still the big boss lol. We met in our early twenties and have grown together as a couple, but also as business partners. With her background in Real Estate and mine in Construction, we feel like a dynamic duo when it comes to homes and renovations.
