Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Will Cherry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Will, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
My most recent album ULTRAVIOLET is the most meaningful project I’ve worked on. I started on it in 2018 and over the course of making it, I learned new instruments, fell in and out of love with different women, and grew so much as a person. ULTRAVIOLET was a constant thing for me, and it meant a lot to not only produce, write, record and mix the album, but to direct all of the visuals and have a much more expansive world surrounding it than my previous projects.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into music when I was about 12 years old. Since then, I’ve been writing, producing, recording and mixing music for myself and others, as well as conceptualizing, directing and editing videos and throwing events to create a platform for other artists.
People often say that my sound and presentation set me apart from my peers and I definitely agree, because I don’t have a very concentrated influence from anyone specific. My music and art is more of an amalgamation of all my influences and experiences. I pride myself of providing something that is unpredictable as it is interesting.
Have you ever had to pivot?
For many years, I was laying low as an artist and focusing on producing for other artists. At the time, I was going by the name Will C. Once 2020 hit, I had been working on both my debut album BURGUNDY and my most recent album ULTRAVIOLET for so long and knew that it was time to make the switch to being primarily an artist. I changed my name to Will Cherry and directed my first video ever for “PSA”, my first single to make it onto streaming services. That moment of becoming Will Cherry was so pivotal to where I am today.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I really want to impact peoples lives heavily in a positive way. Either through telling my story and letting them know they aren’t alone emotionally, or by just providing joy with great music. The same joy I felt as a teenager looking up to Tyler and Frank. I think I’ll eventually become one of the biggest and best hip-hop artists we’ve ever seen. It’s just about taking the actions now to make that a reality in the future.
