We were lucky to catch up with Will Brian recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Will, thanks for joining us today. Often the greatest growth and the biggest wins come right after a defeat. ther times the failure serves as a lesson that’s helpful later in your journey. We’d appreciate if you could open up about a time you’ve failed.
At 16, I attended Warren Tech, where I was assigned to a marketing team working on advertisements and visual elements for an exhibition at the Arvada Center. Throughout the design process, I focused solely on my individual contributions and rarely engaged with my teammates, clients, or teachers. When it came time to present my final work to the Arvada Center board, I was faced with the reality that my designs lacked continuity and didn’t align with the work of my team. The board candidly told me that my designs didn’t work, which was a humbling experience. This feedback taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of communication, collaboration, and teamwork in the design process that I have carried with me throughout college and into my design career.
Will, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I first discovered my passion for graphic design in a sophomore-year elective course at Chatfield Senior High, and I instantly fell in love with the field. My teacher, Mr. Alex Finney, played a pivotal role in nurturing this newfound interest. His infectious enthusiasm and the engaging, hands-on projects he guided us through sparked my creativity and inspired me to dive deeper into design. That course was a turning point for me, and Mr. Finney’s encouragement had a lasting impact on my decision to pursue design as a career from a young age.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is problem-solving. Currently, my focus is on UX/UI design, where the design process is filled with complex challenges that need to be addressed. I truly enjoy collaborating with my team to create final designs that are not only visually appealing but also meaningful and functional in the real world. Tackling issues like user accessibility is especially fulfilling, and I love diving deep into these problems to find thoughtful, practical solutions that make a tangible difference.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
A major goal in my creative journey is to find ways to include and connect with all people through design. Whether it’s something as simple as creating a vibrant, eye-catching t-shirt that brings joy to someone, or developing a fully functional application that enhances workplace efficiency, I want my work to make a positive impact. I’m driven by the idea that design can be both purposeful and meaningful, improving experiences and making a difference in people’s lives, no matter how big or small the project.
