We were lucky to catch up with Wildlord Domingue recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wildlord, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I took my college typography class, I immediately knew that I wanted to become a graphic designer. My professor mentioned successful designers, which inspired and motivated me. Growing up in a low-income community, I didn’t know that becoming a successful graphic designer was an achievable goal until I went to college. I wasn’t exposed to this possibility. Even though I always loved art, I didn’t realize that I could make a living as a creative. Taking my typography class reignited my love for art and design, and motivated me to strive to become the best designer I can be.
Wildlord, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a graphic designer with a passion for creating designs that celebrate the human experience. I am driven by a deep love for bold typography, rich texture, and striking layout. I believe that design has the power to inspire, motivate, and touch people’s hearts in profound ways.
To me, good design is not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a powerful emotional connection with the viewer. Having grown up in a tough neighborhood, I not only aspired to get out but also wanted to be a positive example for kids there, showing them that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, creatively.
In 2021, I began my design career as an intern for a venture capital agency that collaborated with multi-million dollar brands. Working under the creative director, I had the opportunity to experience what it’s like to work with brands such as Once Upon A Farm, Beekeepers, Nécessaire, Osea, Farmer’s Dog, and Obé. This exposure immersed me in the creative realm of design, helping me understand the language of design through typography, collaborations, presentations, and client needs.
I believe that every design should tell a unique story, one that speaks to the heart and soul of the human experience. Whether working on a website, a logo, or a marketing campaign, I strive to create designs that not only look beautiful but also carry a deep sense of purpose and meaning.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I believe that as a graphic designer, my ultimate goal is to always keep Jesus Christ first and to inspire young black and brown kids by showing them that it’s possible to pursue their passions through hard work and dedication. One of my favorite quotes while growing up was “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard,” and I constantly live by that philosophy. There are numerous paths to success, and I want to demonstrate to my community that their goals are achievable and not far-fetched.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I believe one of the most rewarding aspects of being creative is seeing your work out in public. It’s incredibly fulfilling to work hard on something and have people love what you’ve created for them, whether it’s a logo, poster, campaign design, etc.
