We were lucky to catch up with Wilbur Mckesson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wilbur , appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
For 10 years I thought about becoming an author. Dating back to 2010, I thought about creating an action thriller novel. Starting and then stopping, numerous times, I finally called my aunt, who published several romance novels. With her help and guidance, she helped me understand the process and was with me every step of the way from conception, finished product, editing, all the way to self-publishing. Her help greatly contributed me self-publishing my first novel, Insertion, when I didn’t know where to look to even get started.
The first book was a grueling process because I was new to everything in the book industry. However, once the first book was completed, it made writing the second book so much easier. I think having a great support system with friends and family helped also.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
What my books provide is an escape from reality. My novels are designed to take whatever heartaches and problems you encounter during your regular days and forget them.
The Bering Group follows a small contingent of washouts from the CIAs notorious training facility, known as the FARM, who are hired by a long time CIA asset whose dream it was to create his own team of off-the-books killers. In each novel, the leader, Jack Knowles, keeps the team gainfully employed with different threats and assignments threatening the lives of every civilian in the United States.
I’m an active duty Coast Guard Officer, with close to 15 years of experience, Drawing on my vast law enforcement background from dealing with drug runners all along the Caribbean and SouthPacific to conducting High Interest Vessel boardings of cargo ships and boardings of fishing boats in the Bering Sea, I have a plethora of knowledge to pull from. My biggest item I want people to understand about me is, if I can take someone whose had a rough day, have them read my book and then are completely engulfed in the story, forgetting all problems and worries, then I’ve done my job.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I love to travel! It’s invigorating and helps me to relax, so being able to take my laptop anywhere in the world, wake up and write, is the best feeling in the world. My goal, is to retire, and devote all of my remaining time and energy into writing, building my fan base, and most importantly expanding my business.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I think the biggest source of new clients is definitely book signings. I’ve met so many people congratulating me, encouraging me, and asking tough questions about my journey. Through the book signings, people will read and email me or give me a follow on any of my social media platforms. Hearing stories from people about their own business ideas and chasing their own dreams brings me happiness. I love to hear people chasing their goals and aspirations, turning them into a reality because the truth is, we’re only here for a short period of time. As Michael Jordan said, “Everybody wants something, but that something doesn’t come for free. If you want more it’s going to cost more.”
