We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wil Prewitt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wil, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe success requires being comfortable with rejection and failure. It’s not just about reaching goals — it’s about how you handle the setbacks along the way. To be successful, you have to not only fail, but learn from those mistakes and grow through them.
One of the most important traits I’ve seen in successful people — and tried to embody myself — is consistency. Consistency builds trust. Whether it’s showing up for clients, delivering on promises, or pushing through slow periods, it’s the steady effort over time that creates results.
I’ve learned this firsthand through over five years of running a business. There were a lot of ‘no’s before I ever got to a ‘yes.’ But those rejections taught me resilience, improved my approach, and helped me build relationships that eventually led to opportunities. Success, for me, has come through showing up every day, learning from each experience, and continuing to move forward.
Wil, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Wil Prewitt, and I’ve been working professionally in videography and photography for over seven years. I got my start back in high school when I picked up a GoPro freshman year. That kicked off a genuine interest in filmmaking, which I pursued more seriously in college. I graduated from the University of Alabama in 2020 with a degree in Telecommunication and Film.
Right after graduation, the job market was tough due to COVID, so I decided to take a different route and start my own business. Weddings were where I first found consistent work, and they’ve remained a key part of what I do. I’ve been fortunate to earn The Knot’s Best of Weddings award for the past three years, which I think reflects the level of care and consistency I try to bring to every project.
These days, my favorite work involves music videos, live music, and event coverage — projects where there’s a lot of energy and creativity involved. I like capturing moments in a way that feels real, not overly polished or forced.
What sets me apart is my focus on keeping things honest and natural — both in how I work with people and how I shoot. Whether it’s a wedding day or a live performance, my goal is always to document the experience in a way that feels true to the moment.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, one of the most rewarding parts of being a creative is seeing the work actually make a difference — whether that’s helping someone tell their story or creating something that leads to real results.
I especially enjoy working with nonprofits. Knowing that a video I created helped raise awareness or bring in more donations for a cause is incredibly meaningful. Another great moment is when a video I shot for an artist connects with a wide audience online — it’s cool to see that kind of reach and reaction.
At the end of the day, it’s fulfilling to know that something I created resonated with people or helped move the needle in some way. That kind of impact makes the work feel worthwhile.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Most of my clients come from a combination of outreach and visibility. About half of my work comes from me actively researching and reaching out to potential clients — whether that’s through networking, direct messages, or identifying people I’d love to collaborate with.
The other half comes through word of mouth, my online presence, and targeted ads I’ve run on social platforms and websites like TheKnot.com. Referrals have been especially valuable — when someone has a good experience and shares my name, it really helps build trust with new clients.
