We recently connected with Whitney LeBlanc and have shared our conversation below.
Whitney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Folks in the juvenile product industry are often removed from the ‘human-hood” that becoming a parent is- very little of it is glamorous. Its hard, thankless work and can be so isolating. I think the fear of bringing this up as if it will scare parents away, has swayed brands toward a less authentic feel- and I think it can be harmful! Parents are sometimes left wondering- why don’t I look so put together, when I’m making my first several outings?

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mom of 3, though I came into this business as a fresh new mom feeling overwhlemed with the online choices, but underwhlemed with the quality and authenticity of those actual choices. I realized as well that the new age “village” that we used to come upon naturally by way of community and family now looks so different; we find people in the same stage of life, by connecting with them through other means, liek social media, and local events, as well as common product interests. We believe we solve the problem of feeling like you NEED something to make parenting easier- you don’t. You need community. The stuff just helps- and we don’t think you need to much stuff- just a few of the RIGHT stuff. And the community to help you discern what stuff that is, thats right for you and your family.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe our community understands that sales are what makes it possible to keep us staffed and doors open, but out true drive for being here is for connection and support of new parents. Weve trudged the depths of new parenthood and can see you right where you are, without judgment or “shoulding” on anyone. We can be a listening ear and a cozy upbeat place to escape the daunting pale that a postpartum home can be.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I joined a buying group in the midst of a big downturn in our business and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. To have a group of other people to bounce ideas off of, listen to those that are already jaded by the industry, and to negotiate buying power with brands looking ot expand only into big box and department stores, has given us so much perspective in just how important we really are and how valuable small business is to our community.
