We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Whitney Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Whitney below.
Whitney , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I actually started baking on a whim. I was going through postpartum after having my very first child. I would sit on the couch and binge watch TV and eat Mainly Sweets. My mind wasn’t what I wanted it to be and I just couldnt get out of it ,watching TV was one of the only distractions I had. I was transitioning into becoming a Mother something I had never done before and to say I was Overwhelmed is an understatement. Sweets and TV became comforts for me .Well just so happens I started watching Zumbos on Netflix. He’s a famous baker who hosts and judges a baking competition. I will say that show is by far my favorite. I was introduced to how Sweets were made. And my brain started to fire. I would fall in love with way they say the desserts name, “We have a Moist Chocolate Cake filled with Hazlehurst Topped with a White Chocolate Ganache and Smooth Swiss meringue Buttercream”. I literally just made that up, but my mouth would water Every time. I was intrigued at the Flavor combos, most of all how beautiful they were. I was hooked. Hooked and went right to the kitchen. I have loved cake since I was a kid. I love icing, cake all of it. And all kinds. I have been baking a total of 5 years. I have been in buisness 2 years. When I decided to go all out and put this buisness together, the main benefit for me was being able to stay home with the children and work to be my own boss. I started experimenting and letting my family and friends try it. Then I thought I can sell these. I can make this a buisness. I got an LLC online went to grab a buisness license and tax ID and got the ball rolling. Over these past few years I’ve been able to learn so much about buisness that I never knew. I’ve been able to refine my process over time and make it more efficient and figure out more ways to increase profit. Also finding my customers. That’s a pretty hard truth I’ve had to accept is that all money isn’t good money. Especially as a small buisness entrepreneur. I had to figure out what value my product had to offer and what value I could bring to the table to make my buisness a scalable one. And one that would last a lifetime.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I believe every cupcake I make is the freshest, most Moist and packs the Flavor right home. All the cupcakes are custom. Some come with homemade fillings, custards and toppings like cookies, wafers, chocolate to name a few. I believe the fresh and best sets Paisleys Cupcakes on its own level of flavor. It’s not Sams, or walmart or kroger, its not processed ,it’s fresh! It reminds me of my granny and my family before me, They would bake a cake fresh weekly and before it could go bad in that cake stand it was gone. And that’s the fresh that’s best.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I was suppose to have my first public launch at my first Vendor event. I had planned and bought all the supplies, to set up as a vendor, so a tent, canopy, sign, and products bought to transport the cupcakes, and hold the cupcakes ,containers, labels and so forth. Only to be asked to not come back due to covid at the time the outdoor event required masks. I was pregnant at the time and I have asthma so a mask for me at an outdoor event was out of the question. Needless to say I got asked to leave and not come back. My very first event. All that preparation and dismissed before I could complete the schedule. I’m happy I kept going anyway.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn unhealthy mental habits. I use to think I lacked capacity. Only to realize I never lacked capacity I only lacked in knowledge and teachers. I am neuro divergent. I was diagnosed with Adhd at a very young age. Talk about being labeled. Once I learned how my brain works it gave me an opportunity to categorize my goals and finally start trying to achieve my dreams.
