We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Whitney Haynes . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Whitney below.
Whitney , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
One of my clients sent me to Berlin for a hair show. I was getting married that year and was paying for my own wedding so money was a bit tight. There was a huge hair show all of my friends were going to and I was a bit jealous. One of my clients heard me talking about it and offered to use miles to pay for my flight there. When I got the ticket I realized it was a first class ticket! I had never been in first class and this show needed up being a very important part of my career as it’s where I first saw my hair mentors on stage. From there I ended to traveling to Europe once a year for hair cutting education.
Whitney , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I went to hair school straight from high school influenced by my uncle who is a stylist and at the time worked for Toni&Guy. I then worked at a salon for a few years to build clientele, and start traveling to learn as much as a I could about cutting hair. 5 years in I created a education company that lead to opening a hair salon at age 25. My son was also born that year. 10 years later we are still open, we have created a product line under the FORM brand which I’m so very proud of. All of our products are made in California, packaging is from Italy, and we use natural and organic ingredients as much as possible.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
One of my good friends mother actually own a manufacturing company in Dallas for skincare. She is the first person to talk to me about creating my own products. I did learn through that process it’s important to own your formulas. I ultimately ended up not working with that company and had to start over with a company in California. It cost quite a bit more to own the formulas but I believe I’m setting myself up for success long term.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
About 5 years ago I had a walk out of my salon. I lost 8 hairstylist weeks before Christmas. It was heartbreaking and I thought we would loose everything. It was a good lesson for me to watch and listen to my business. As much as we always want to be in control as leaders we are not in control. We must work as a team and that includes listening to the team along the way so we can pivot when needed to ensure success for everyone.
