We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Whitney Gaskins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Whitney below.
Alright, Whitney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
My prayer is that people will say that I made a genuine difference on the lives of people who were the most vulnerable. I have been honored with several awards in what I consider a short career. I recognize that each of these represents an impact made on other individuals or groups. I want to be remember as someone who cared for those who were the most vulnerable,
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started my foundation when I was Miss Black Ohio in 2009 to bring access to STEM to students within the State of Ohio. We officially launched the Gaskins Foundation in 2013. In the ten years since, we have been able to engage thousands of students throughout the State of Ohio and in other regions. We have been able to engage families in hands-on STEM activities and college and career readiness programming. I am most proud of the students and parents who come to me years after they have completed our program and tell us that our program is a huge part of the reason why they completed and/or are succeeding in a STEM major.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Bringing a unique perspective to the space has always been what set our programming apart from others. Oftentimes being the only Black women in the room has placed my work under a spotlight. This has meant that we had to always deliver quality programming and ideas. Whether is it through my foundation or in my work as a faculty member, I have always strived to be the voice that is bringing meaningful change to the discussion.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth. Our families are our biggest marketing tool.
