We were lucky to catch up with Whitney Anthony recently and have shared our conversation below.
Whitney , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
I think people have grown tired of the overt social media marketing strategies. You log on to see what your friends are up to, and you wind up bombarded by targeted advertising. There’s so much of it, so often, that people are just rapidly scrolling through their feeds trying to find something of actual interest.
My approach is different. In today’s “attention economy,” businesses no longer need to sell you something. They just need to be able to get your attention. So how do you do that? Back to the basics. Familiarity, entertainment, and providing useful information that they didn’t know before.
To teach and entertain, those will always remain my highest priorities in the online arena.
Whitney , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Of course! So, I spent the majority of my life in front of the camera, as a singer/songwriter and actress. I know a thing or two about captivating audiences. I first began making videos and diving into the social media world, after my manager suggested I create a YouTube account to further my interaction with fans. I quickly fell in love with the creative power of digital storytelling.
I started VOW Creative, LLC as a video production company in 2015 and it has since expanded to include social media management and content creation services, at the request of many of my clients. I’m thrilled to help local businesses and Real Estate Professionals in the Triangle grow by telling their story in a way that’s able to captivate and entertain their audience. I have an innate understanding of the power of perception and pride myself on seeing things differently than most. The uniqueness of my perspective is a value add service to clients. And in today’s digital world, the way a brand or business is perceived has never been more important.
I’m an empath, artist, and storyteller, with a passion and gift for helping both people and businesses grow. In addition to my video and performance work, I’m also an avid writer. I run an inspirational website called Vehicle of Wisdom (www.vehicleofwisdom.com) which has almost 10,000 subscribers from around the globe.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Yes, making videos is always something I’ve done for fun. I used to film myself as a child singing songs that I had written before I could physically write. It was the only way I could remember them. I made my first documentary short when I was 10 years old, it was about my sister and affectionately titled, “My sister, uncut.” Haha! My first “real” documentary short was made when I was a sophomore in college about our life in the sorority house. I gifted it to my girl friends who were featured. I love telling stories whether I’m writing songs or making videos. It’s all the same to me.
When enough people began wanting to pay me for real estate marketing videos, I started the LLC. That was 2015. It remained a “side hustle” while I worked in Commercial Real Estate until 2019, when I decided to just take a leap and go full time. I got lucky because Covid hit shortly thereafter and the business blew up. Suddenly, everyone was asking for marketing videos and wanted their brand/business to be seen on social media. So much is about timing.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Yes, the story of VOW Creative is a story of pivoting. I ask people what they want and I give it to them. That’s always worked for me as a business owner.
It began because people wanted marketing videos. So I made them marketing videos. Then, social media began implementing short form videos like TikTok’s and reels, so clients started wanting those. And I started making them those. As a general rule of thumb, if more than three clients ask me for the same thing, and I’m capable of delivering it, I will.
The business of digital media is a business of constant pivoting. Flexibility is key.
