We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Whichcraft a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Whichcraft, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I first knew that being on the stage in front of thousands of people and performing a show was when I first seen “ TOMMY” by the Who . The only thing that brought me true faithfulness besides God was my music . It never once let me down . It was always there if I needed it or I was always there if it needed me . It was all I could think about even before I could barely think ; meaning a seven year old kid lol . I was basically that Kid in the house using the bamboo stick as a microphone or a guitar .
Whichcraft, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I go by Whichcraft meaning Which Craft ? A play on words if you may . I am versatile in the art of making music (therefore many -crafts- ) I sing I rhyme I write I perform I make beats play the piano . I am an artist with a mission to uplift . I believe if God gave me a voice to perform music than it was made for something that could benefit the people and life around me . I want to give power something to real and tangible which love . I basically been performing sense early High school . I have opened up for many of the greats and sat in the office of Colombia Records by the time I was 17 . Booking my own shows and performing with my own dancers and back up singers by the time I was graduating. . I was driven and drawn to it so much that it lived in my soul . No matter how hard I tried to think about something else or doing something else . I help begin a whole collective of 50 artists worldwide called MHB and pushed forward with producers graffiti artists emcees . The Waves got bigger and bigger and determination increased and 30 albums later I am all over independent radio and podcast and blogs . The Djs love me and I love them back like one big Boom BAP family . I could back track about being a lead singer in a band and almost getting signed to Road Runner records by the lead singer of Blink 182 but I feel like that’s a whole other story . As far as my brand I am am a music mentor . I do vocal coaching and ghost wiring , Hip Hip coaching and image development. And more than any I can song write very well .
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
What society can do best to help support us musicians more is open their minds . Write to the radio stations and tell them to fire their program directors and allow newer artists to get played . Their is so much talent out their that is Unsung In the Hip Hop genre alone because the media dictates trends and what to listen to . But trends come and go . The real talents is constant and remains . I feel museums and art galleries should collaborate more with independent bands and Hip Hop groups to create a unified front of artistic creatives which can benefit everyone in the long run .
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There is definitely a goal and my goal is to end up in the festival circuit . I want to tour and play at different festivals . I love to perform.
