We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wheres Dank a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Wheres , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I was working construction and I really hated it completely. If it was 99 degrees or 0 degrees, I’d most likely be outside working. I told someone I was thinking about quitting and working the studio full time and he told me that’s the stupidest thing they ever heard. It took my back a little but once I lost my benefits at work I was pretty much forced to quit. I wasn’t going to do that crappy job with no benefits. I decided to rent out a room at the studio I was working at and put everything I had financially into when I only had 2-3 clients I was working with. I was at a point where I didn’t even had money for gas to drive to my studio to go and make money. I had to ask a friend to borrow money which is something I hate doing. After that the next time I seen that friend I just happened to have the money he let me borrow in cash in my pocket from doing sessions that night! I do the studio full time and I’m happy everyday!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve always loved rap music ever since I was a kid. I rapped and worked on my own music but I had trouble finding a studio and an engineer that wasn’t money hungry, actually loved music like I did, and was willing to help me develop. That’s why people enjoy coming to me is because I’m an artist first so I offer them the stuff that I was looking for, I know what they want in their music because it’s the same I wanted for mine! But of course most importantly people love the quality I give them!! If anyone is looking to book studio time in Denver, if they wanna send their stems to mix or if they’re looking for me to feature on a song you could find me anywhere @Wheres_Dank I’m most active on Instagram
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I am working everyday with people who are chasing the very same dream that I am chasing! Sometimes I feel like a therapist because they’re sharing a part of their life that they may not even feel comfortable telling the closest people in their lives. & then I bring their vision to life! It really doesn’t feel like a job to me, I get to work with talented artists on a daily basis

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Music is the most hardest artistry to do. It takes a lot of investment of both time and money to put yourself in any position to see a return. The best way to show support is by liking, commenting, giving solid feed back to the person showing you their music. It sucks when people are like your music is trash. Well tell them why.. is it the mixing is it their flow the bars they’re saying? Let them know! If they can’t handle the feedback that’s their problem. I’m always going to be honest when people send me their music and that’s what is going to make them better!
