We recently connected with West Berman and have shared our conversation below.
West, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I wanted to pursue music professionally around the end of my junior year at Huston Tillotson. Going to college really gave me and understanding of different people. I was able to meet some pretty talented individuals, specifically in the music world. I’ve been writing since high school coming up with verses and poems in my spare time, but with limited knowledge in music at the time, I always assumed you needed some fancy budget to actually record in a studio setting. I laugh at that everyday now! However, when going into my senior year, I was given tips and knowledge from the other artists on campus that I met. From then on I knew with a plan I could and would want to do this forever.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I begin recording music in college, but I’ve always been a writer! Recording for me just seem to have come natural. So by my junior year I was ready to hit the ground running in music professionally. Though one of the biggest influences in my pursuit of a music career would my Uncle. Since a child I remember growing up and seeing him put on shows and events for people to come out to and have a great time, and what would an event be without music! He was also a DJ so my knowledge of music expanded over time and even gave me the courage to venture out and listen to other genres other than hip hop.
My ear for music was also a big influence in how I got into the art. This is what sets me apart from a lot of artist. Everything about a song must be broken down ,from the notes to the instruments used. I believe in painting somewhat of a picture for my audience. So that way every verse, every bar is a memorable one.
What I am most proud of at the moment is the progress I am making on my next album “Midnight in Magnolia”. Fans will hear not only development in my sound, but I’m bringing a new energy as well. I recently got the chance to perform at Empire Control Room in Austin, TX, so I am also very proud of that as well. The crowd was very receptive and I can’t wait to be back!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
SUPPORT! Telling a friend about my music the same you would Drake, or Kanye, or Travis Scott. You can’t push your music too much. I never believe that is possible, but the only way of people to listen is other being just as confident as you. I sure everyone has a “rapper” friend, but if they have talent that can be pushed why not push it? I feel society just needs to support overall. Don’t make listening to independent artist a chore but rather an experience in a journey many don’ have the courage to do. Those big artist I named above didn’t just star off as mega stars, it was the work they put in and the support they got from people in their city and beyond. This helps artist get seen by people that could help them develop or possibly give them what they need to become that star they’re working to become.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To create music that is here forever not just temporarily! A lot of music is saturated now a days with streaming becoming so big. It can be very easy to make similar sounding songs as well. Weather it be similar to an artist or to another song you did. My goal in this creative journey is to make sure my music brings a new feeling in every song. I never want fans to hear a song, go to the next, and feel like they are listening to the same one they just heard. I love painting pictures in my music of the experiences I’m presenting. I don’t think a lot of people do that as often now, so I’m determined to bring that back.
