We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wesley Sontag a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wesley , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have about 3 projects in the next 9 months that I’m incredibly excited about. The one I am most excited about is this project called ‘Life’s been crazy’ It’s super sunny, and beautiful. It contains very rich guitars, and bass’s along with pretty background synths, almost Fleetwood Mac banging drums, and weird out of this world vocals. It’s almost like psychedelic rock but with my own twist on it. You’ll hear my biggest inspirations peeking out throughout the project such as tame impala, lil Yachtys ‘lets start here’ project, Mac miller, Steve lacy, and Fleetwood Mac of course. There’s plenty more inspirations I could name off but those are some of the main ones. I am currently reworking it with my close friend and very talented writer and producer Andy Schmidt. I produced and wrote the original ideas and Im taking it to him to kinda perfect them and do the best thing for the music. All in all this project is about love, lost love, and enjoying life in a sunny psychedelic kind of way. I am very excited for it, this project in a way is like my star child it sets me on fire every time I listen to it, and I really think I have something special with this one.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I started about 4 years ago when I was 19. It’s always something I wanted to do but just never saw it as realistic however shortly after entering college I realized there’s no point in chasing after something I don’t truly love to do, and so my artistry began, and I started music with absolutely no knowledge or experience with music or writing. I genuinely didn’t know one note on the piano. Furthermore, I started learning piano, and production in 2019, and it’s been a tough but rewarding journey. Everything I made for the first 2-3 years was pretty awful to be honest. It could be very discouraging at times but, I’ve always kind of known once I know what I want to do thats it. There’s no backup plan or plan b this is me. It’s a part of my soul and without it is without me. However, I know for sure I wouldn’t be where I am right now if I didn’t really push myself into learning this I’ve always sort of known what separates the 1% from the 99% is purely in your mentality, and the way you think. There’s no special trick or method to make this work you just have to want it more than everyone else, and it’s as simple as that. I believe what sets me apart from other artists is purely in the feeling and being able to put the listener into a completely different world. Furthermore, some of my other walks of art I started between 2020, and 2021 include graphic design, and videography/video editing. I kind of knew from the start I would have to do all of this on my own if I were to have any success simply because, it’s not sustainable to outsource everything I need done, and so around then I bought a camera and all the necessary equipment to do all of those things. I do all my own cover art, and except a few video content I’ve pretty much done all of that too as far as the editing goes. Every once in a while I will do videos for other people or pictures but for the most part I just use it for my personal stuff. I believe when it comes to music however, I think the problems I am able to best solve is the quality, and the feeling of the artists ideas. I believe I have a very unorthodox style of creating that allows the artist to come out in a special way. The things I am most proud of is these next 3 upcoming projects I think they’re all incredibly special but specifically the last one coming out in the summer. It is my magnum opus. I think the last thing I would want anyone interested in what I’m doing to know about me is that I’m purely here to create special things, and experiences, with special people nothing less, and nothing more. I never started doing this for any exterior motive other than to create beautiful and powerful things that can hopefully one day impact the world in a positive way.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect is always the process of making the music itself there’s nothing better. I’ve not found another thing in the world that quite compares to the feeling of creating a song that’s special. As you’re in the midst of what feels like in the moment “the next big thing”. Heartbeat rises, goosebumps appear, and every cell in your body begins to vibrate at frequencies you never thought they could. Everything in that moment seems to come clear, and all problems or other things in your life seem to cease to exist in that wonderful place. It truly is a beautiful experience.
