We recently connected with Wesley Hobbs and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Wesley, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I decided at 9 years old that I wanted to be a Film Director. I aspired to be like the greats – Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, George Lucas, and so many more. I quickly discovered after graduating college that this effort would be met with extraordinary challenges. I saw in front of me a saturated industry where artists just like me strived for greatness.
in 2018, I made the decision to keep my passion at the forefront of my goals, but to expand upon it in order to develop a career that would bring my skill sets into new forms like Marketing. This pursuit has taught me one thing, sometimes it is better to be known for your ability to adapt and expand rather than settle for one expertise.
Looking to the future, I hope my legacy is just that – to be known for my ability to persevere, overcome, and adapt to any creative form. I am, at heart, an artist. I believe in creating freely, and combining talents to make something that lasts forever. I hope to be known as a dedicated craftsman, someone who takes pride in their work, and brings emotion to intangible motives. Most of all, I hope to be known as a storyteller who can bring a wide array of mediums to the table.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Wesley Hobbs, and I am a Creative Professional and Artist, with over 10 years of experience in Graphic Design, Video Production, Writing, and Marketing. I have a BFA in Film Production from the New York Film Academy, and have found my passion in telling stories through a wide array of creative mediums.
I was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California, where most of my life was spent on a ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Growing up surrounded by nature was a true privilege, although it meant being far away from my peers – and lots of free time on my hands. I took it upon myself to use this time to educate myself in creative art forms. At 16, I started a clothing brand called Only In Santa Cruz, which required an understanding of basic Graphic Design and Marketing skills to succeed. I spent countless hours learning the ins and outs of Adobe Creative Suite, enhancing my design abilities every chance I got. Only In Santa Cruz became a major success in my teen years, but I had a bigger passion in mind for my future – a Film Director. In 2015, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a degree in Film Production at the New York Film Academy.
While attending NYFA, I learned everything about Filmmaking, from Screenwriting to Pre-Production, Cinematography to Editing, and even Scheduling and Budgeting productions. I dedicated myself to the craft, and in 2018, I found success at the Burbank International Film Festival, where my Thesis Short Film, The River Styx Motel, placed as a Semi-Finalist and was screened for thousands of attendees. In this short film, I served as the Writer, Director, and Editor.
After graduating, I decided to take my storytelling abilities in a new direction that would allow me to build a career that aligned with my interests. In this search, I discovered Marketing. My first experience in the Marketing field was on Commercial shoots. Working directly with companies on large-scale commercials allowed me to build the world around their vision, and create engaging creative that would draw customers to the product. I fell in love with this concept, and knew that my best next step was to join a company full time, and use all of my skill sets to help craft their stories in the same way.
In 2018, I began my Marketing career as a Graphic Designer and Videographer, and have since built upon my skill sets exponentially. I have become a master of Design and Video Production, and have successfully utilized my skills over the last 6 years to scale companies and their respective marketing departments. In the years to come, I hope to continue expanding my career, and learn new creative skills in the process.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My ultimate goal, which has stuck with me since nine years old, is to be a Film Director. To tell stories in new ways and showcase my creations in unique ways, much like the great Directors who came before me. This goal has driven me my whole life, from choosing to move to LA on a whim, to taking the long road and learning new skill sets that could me a better creative mind. My journey has always been guided by passion. I truly believe that when you have a calling, you should always strive to find your path to success within it.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My greatest pivot thus far in my career has been moving from Film to Marketing. This was not by any means an easy decision, but it is one I have dedicated myself to, and believe will benefit me in the future. Sometimes life throws hurdles, but as long as you stay focused, believe in your mission, and work hard – great things can happen. I have since been in the Marketing field for 6 years, and have had success in bringing companies’ stories to life through engaging creative mediums. I have filmed commercials, utilizing my passion for film as my instinctual compass, and I have designed thousands of graphics to educate customers on amazing products. It has been a pleasure, and I know that my time in Film will make a triumph comeback when the timing is right.
