We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wesley Earp a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wesley, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
My mission is to help people take control of their personal and business finances! I created WEInvested to help my community learn more about financial literacy and building a business. I’ve always been interested in money since I was a kid. I started saving money at an early age because I saw that money could buy you the things that you want. My father showed me how to earn money at an early age. At the age of 9, he gave me $10 to buy candy to sell at school – this was my first attempt at entrepreneurship. The candy business taught me the importance of reinvesting my earnings so I could purchase more inventory. By the age of 12, I was selling mixed CD’s to my classmates. I would buy 500 blank CDs for $5 and sell each individual mixed CD for $5 a piece. I’ve always enjoyed making money, building businesses, and helping people. In 2017 I earned my degree in Trust and Wealth Management and felt the urge to share the wealth building knowledge that I learned with my family and friends. This is how WEInvested was created. I wanted a way to help my family get ahead and establish good financial habits.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m from North Carolina. Growing up, I never knew anything about financial literacy or how to successfully start a business. I created WEInvested out of personal interest. I went to school and majored in Trust and Wealth management. This sparked my interest in personal finance. I moved across the country to pursue my career in Ultra High Net Worth Wealth Management. I completed my MBA in finance and started my podcast to help educate my community. The WEInvested Podcast helps listeners learn how to budget, secure business funding, target an audience, and scale their company. WEInvested provides ebooks, apparel, liquidity, and free online content to help users take control of their finances. I want my supporters to know that I am here to help them through whatever stage of business they are in.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I created a strong reputation within my market by earning the credentials and studying my craft. I completed my MBA in finance in 2021 to set myself apart from the other financial content creators. Staying consistent with my craft also helped me to create trust with the listeners. Consistency is the biggest key to success. The listeners know that they can count on me to drop content on a consistent schedule. In addition to that, I’ve shown my supporters how I’ve personally implemented good financial habits in my life; like budgeting and investing. I feel the most effective way to lead and teach is through action. Once you show that something is possible people will start to do it themselves and take it even further.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I used the bootstrap method to fund my business. I saved and invested my money into my brand and my ideas. I use the income from my 9-5 to fund my goals. Learning how to save is the first step to creating a business. Instead of spending my bonuses and discretionary income on material things, I focused on purchasing items I needed to start my business. I only like spending money on things that make more money. If I can do it, anyone can do it!
