We recently connected with Weslee Jane and have shared our conversation below.
Weslee, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started my beauty career back in 2002 as a Cosmetologist shortly after I graduated High School. In school, I had a dream to open up a beauty service for women who were either single moms, in recovery, or trying to get back on their feet. Being a single mom myself, I knew that I wanted to focus on helping those who were struggling as I had.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At 30 years old I developed adult-onset acne from my pregnancy which lingered after I gave birth. At this time I knew that I wanted to go back to school to focus on skin. Powered through with a newborn, my 10-year-old daughter, and two stepchildren. I quickly knew that I was where I was meant to be, skin came naturally to me and I absolutely loved it. After I was officially licensed I started working at a well-known MedSpa in Downtown San Diego owned by two amazing people; Erin and LA, thank you for molding me into the business owner I am! After two years at the MedSpa my family received devastating news when my Mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer on my birthday. I took a leave of absence from the Med Spa to become my moms’ primary caregiver. I cared for my mom for the next six months and watched every part of her body change. One main issue we ran into during her illness was the change in her skin from the strength to the products she could use, to the texture and hydration level. I found a new focus for my skincare career and knew that working with oncology-approved products was a must for me because it was so hard for us to find her any relief and I wanted to make that easier for people moving forward. I have had my own skincare business since November 2017 and my primary focus has been ensuring that the products I use are on the cleaner side while still being effective in correcting my clients’ concerns. Continuing education is a major component of my business. I am also trained in ShadeBlending Brows, UNDO Tattoo Removal, as well G.E.L. Lash Lifts. I am currently working on becoming an Oncology Certified Aesthetician and looking into going to Electrolysis School.
My goal with each and every client is for them to leave my studio feeling more confident, beautiful, relaxed, and loved than they did when they arrived.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think we can all agree that 2020 was a major shift in all aspects of life and business. I moved to a new town in January 2020 and was working primarily at LifeSpa in La Jolla. After we were shut down for months I knew it was time for me to look for a new location for my business. I landed at a local salon up here in Alpine in July 2020. The following month I received another devastating phone call from my sister that my dad had unexpectedly passed away. I thank my angel at that time; Joani; for allowing me to put my business on hold while occupying one of her rooms so that I could tend to my family matters. I do not recall how long it took me to get back in my studio but I can say that opening a new business in the middle of a pandemic while grieving the loss of my father was both challenging and inspiring. I owe my dedication, drive, spirit, and resilience, to my parents.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth and referrals are my best friend and the biggest compliment I can get from my clients; besides them snoring during their facial. I do offer my clients special savings for every client that they send my way as well as $50 off to first-time clients. I absolutely love what I do and want others to be able to experience what I have to offer as well as say thank you for helping my business grow,
