Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wenlu Guo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
WENLU, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I wanted to embark on a career path was about six years ago. At that time, I was a transfer student at the Fashion Institute of Technology. And there was a course called fashion styling; in that class, the professor will give us a theme, and we will do projects as a group. According to the corresponding theme, we will make a shooting plan, work with models, style the models, and shoot just like a professional photography shoot. In this course, I really enjoyed coming up with ideas and shooting together with the group members. From then on I decided to pursue a career in fashion photography.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The first job I had in fashion photography was as a photographer’s creative assistant right after I graduated. I consider myself really lucky to have the opportunity to work with him. To be honest , when I first started out in the fashion photography profession, I had no idea what the term “creative” meant.I had no experience with photography, but I was just fascinated by these creative photos, which is why I want to pursue a career in this industry. During this period, I received systematically training in how to think creatively, communicate with a variety of clients, and obtain actual work experience in this field.
After this job, I entered a set design studio. One year later, because I wanted to prepare for my master applications and get more free time, I started doing freelance art direction and set design jobs on my own. My job is mainly providing clients with shooting set design and window design for some fashion brands. Last year, I successfully applied to become a graduate student at SVA. I came to New York by myself, started studying fashion photography, and restarted my life with new environment and identity.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
For creative workers, the most important thing in this society is to protect the intellectual property rights of every creative worker. Plagiarism is very common in the creative industry. Corresponding and complete laws and social publicity can more effectively protect the works of every creative.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding moments are when I create great images with my team. Sometimes I will see the projects I participated in on the advertising screens or magazines in shopping malls and airports, which is the moment when I feel that my work is the most meaningful.
