Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wendy Wortham . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Wendy , thanks for joining us today. Everyone has crazy stuff happen to them, but often small business owners and creatives, artists and others who are doing something off the beaten path are hit with things (positive or negative) that are so out there, so unpredictable and unexpected. Can you share a crazy story from your journey?
I started Texas Twins Events after dissolving Defending Debt Lawsuit Consultants LLC as a way to finally spend more time with my twin sister who took on the role of raising her twin granddaughters. I wanted to give others the experience I had never had on their wedding day. From the inception, I welcomed diversity. In 2015, Jeff Mosier of the Dallas Morning News couldn’t find any wedding vendor willing to admit they were LBGT friendly except me. In 2015 my twin Cindy and I rebranded and expanded by merging Texas Twins Treasures & Texas Twins Events to create a barter option, The Pawning Planners. We filmed a television pilot together. At an NOH8 event with my twin, Cindy and the twins, Maryssa and Makenna, a CW33 reporter spotted two sets of twins and interviewed me. A lady who was planning to marry an inmate saw the interview and contacted me to marry her at a Texas Prison. So from the beginning whatever it took I wanted to make dream events affordable, memorable and special but even I couldn’t have predicted my business shifting from traditional bookings on the weekends to prisons during the week and venues on weekends. It happened though. I recently wrapped filming for Prison Brides Season One. For all of these years Cindy and I have met incredible people from every background and had an amazing adventure that started with my desire to be for others what I had never had myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I noticed right away that clients marrying an inmate were single income households and as such wanted to do more for them than I would a traditional client as I’m often the only person celebrating with them and for them. So I provide a ring to my client, bridal or groom gifts on wedding day and created a massive inventory so they have bridal photos like a traditional client would as well as treating them to lunch. Nobody will do these things because they cost money but I invest in my clients. Referrals took my business National then international.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
For the first few years I lost money. I expected this as I was aware that starting a new business would take time to turn around. My twin sister, Cindy came up with an idea in 2014 to stop hot checks and clients who wouldn’t pay their bill. We rebranded and expanded to take trades and filmed a television pilot for our unique option of taking trades we would refurbish and flip at Texas Twins Treasures. This stopped the hard luck story scenarios that had cost me so much money in the beginning. It was a game changer and had never been done in the events industry but in 2007, real estate tanked and my husband is a real estate developer. Overnight things changed financially so I created Texas Twins Treasures to liquidate assets and save the biggest one, our home. Cindy and I are experienced flippers.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy to grow your business is client referrals. I go above and beyond for my clients and in turn I’ve never needed to advertise. Clients came to me from referrals all over the world.
