We recently connected with Wendy Powell and have shared our conversation below.
Wendy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My dad was a business owner. He owned a sod/landscape business. Both my mom and dad were hard workers. They believed you could do anything if you worked hard enough. Growing up I always thought my dad expected a lot from me. If I got a B in school he would ask why I didn’t get an A. He knew I had more potential than what I was doing. He pushed me to be my best. My mom never did anything halfway. I was taught if you are going to do something, do it to the best of your ability and always follow through. Being a business owner is hard work but my parents prepared me to handle the hard work and give it all I have.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am the owner of Crossroads Coffee. I started out in the medical field many years ago. After I had kids I stayed at home. While staying at home my family fell in love with a tea company in Greenville. They sadly went out of business. We found out who bought the business and purchased the wholesale tea business from them. Our tea business is called The Tea Obsession. We enjoyed going to farmers markets and selling our tea online but we really wanted a place for people to gather. We knew we needed something that complimented our tea and we felt that coffee was the perfect match. We knew very little about coffee so we spent 3 years researching and learning about coffee. Once we found the perfect space we put our dreams into place and Crossroads 4 Coffee and Tea was born.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being consistent. Meaning… being open when we say we will be open, and making sure our products are the same each time a customer comes in. Working on great customer service.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Treat your employees like you would want to be treated. I also work with them. I do what they do. If I won’t or can’t do something I would never ask my employees to do it.
