Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wendy Massey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Wendy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
The defining moment in my career came 14 years ago, after a decade of working as an ER and Trauma Nurse. My son became deathly ill, and despite consulting some of the best physicians I knew, every appointment ended the same way — another prescription, another procedure. Nine months into that journey, it struck me that not one of them had ever asked about his diet.
That realization changed everything. I began researching the connection between nutrition and healing, and what I discovered was both eye-opening and life-changing. Within five weeks of implementing a clean, whole-food approach, my son went from being nearly bedridden to running a 10K. He was able to discontinue every medication except his insulin (he’s a Type 1 diabetic). Watching that transformation unfold through the power of food alone was nothing short of miraculous.
That experience became my calling. I returned to school, first earning my Bachelor’s in Holistic Health Sciences and later my PhD in Integrative Medicine. It ignited my passion for helping others uncover the root causes of illness and reclaim their health through education, lifestyle, and faith-based holistic healing.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Dr. Wendy Sue Massey, PhD, AMP—founder of Freedom Holistic Wellness and Grace & Grove Homestead. Before I ever entered the world of holistic health, I spent ten years as an ER and Trauma Nurse. I loved helping people in crisis, but I also saw how often the system focused on symptom management rather than true healing.
That truth hit home when my son became critically ill fourteen years ago. Despite working with some of the best physicians I knew, no one asked about his nutrition or lifestyle. I realized how little we’re taught about prevention in conventional medicine—and that realization led me down an entirely new path. After diving deep into nutrition and integrative healing, I watched my son transform his health in just five weeks through food alone. That miracle inspired me to return to school for my Bachelor’s in Holistic Health Sciences and later my PhD in Integrative Medicine so I could help others find the same freedom.
Today, through Freedom Holistic Wellness, I help clients uncover and heal the root causes of their health struggles—things like fatigue, stubborn weight, hormone imbalance, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction—using a whole-body, faith-based approach. My work combines functional nutrition, detoxification, mindset, and spiritual renewal in programs such as the 12-Week Personalized Healing Pathway, Reclaim & Renew, and my 6-Month Freedom Fighters Mentorship. Every plan is personalized, practical, and focused on sustainable lifestyle transformation, not temporary fixes.
What sets my work apart is that I bridge the science of functional medicine with the truth of Scripture and the power of mindset. I don’t push products or quick fixes—I teach people how to restore balance in their bodies naturally so they can live with energy, clarity, and peace.
Alongside my wellness practice, my husband and I are building Grace & Grove Homestead, a two-acre retreat space where I grow the same fruits, herbs, veggies, and plants I teach about—integrating food, faith, and healing in one place. It’s becoming a sanctuary for upcoming retreats, education, and community experiences where guests can reconnect with creation and themselves.
What I’m most proud of is seeing lives truly change—clients reversing lifelong health issues, breaking free from overwhelm, and rediscovering joy in the process. The name “Freedom Holistic Wellness” isn’t just a business—it’s the mission God placed on my heart: to help people find freedom—body, mind, and spirit.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Without a doubt, consistency and authenticity have been the cornerstones of everything I do. From the beginning, I made a commitment to show up—whether that meant speaking on a large stage or at a small local gathering with just two people in attendance. I’ve never believed any event was too small or any audience insignificant. Every opportunity is a chance to serve, encourage, and educate someone who might be searching for hope.
I remember one event in particular where I was told I might not be well-received because it was an African American business leaders conference and I didn’t “fit the expected demographic.” But I went anyway—because health doesn’t belong to one group or another, and everyone deserves access to knowledge about how to fuel their body well. That event ended up opening incredible doors and lifelong connections.
What truly builds a reputation, I believe, isn’t marketing tricks or algorithms—it’s authentic connection and integrity. I speak from experience, share my faith openly, and meet people exactly where they are. I don’t pretend to have it all together; I simply share what I’ve learned and how I can help. Over time, people can feel that sincerity.
Ultimately, my reputation has been built one person at a time—through genuine relationships, follow-through, and the consistency of showing up both online and in person with the same message: that true wellness is possible when we align the body, mind, and spirit.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the mindset I carried over from my years in conventional medicine. When I first transitioned into holistic practice, I unknowingly brought the same “treat the symptom” approach with me—only now, I was using supplements and natural therapies instead of pharmaceuticals and procedures. It looked different on the surface, but at its core, it was still reactive care.
I quickly realized that I could give someone the best supplements in the world, but if their gut was unhealthy and their nutrition was poor, those supplements were little more than expensive band-aids. That realization changed everything. I began focusing first and foremost on nutrition and gut healing, helping clients rebuild a strong foundation through food, hydration, and lifestyle before ever layering in targeted therapies. Once the body is nourished and the gut is functioning properly, then natural support can truly work the way it’s intended.
This shift also changed how I view health altogether—from a reactive model of symptom management to a proactive approach centered on prevention and cellular health. It’s been one of the most powerful mindset transformations of my career and a cornerstone of how I now teach and guide others toward lifelong wellness.
