We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wendy Figone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wendy, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I believe that stress drives pathology, so we need to learn how to recognize and treat stress that accumulates in our minds and bodies. I refer to my story “My gift in ugly wrapping paper”. I grew up in the Santa Cruz mountains, my sisters and I raised ourselves for the most part. As a result of my early childhood adversity, I became a people pleaser and came to value myself based on how much I could make other people feel better. This coping mechanism of helping the suffering of others often came at my own personal expense: losing myself . Reaching mid life, life was just not working. I became deeply committed to healing my own wounds, not only for my own personal benefit but so I could remain in capacity to support others on their healing paths and NOT hitting burnout.
Wendy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have spent my life studying lifestyle medicine: how can we support our own health without synthetic drugs that have many known and unknown side effects. My training and practices inlcude: 30 years of meditation practice at Spirit Rock Mediation Center, BS in Exercise and Nutrition, Yoga Therapist, Expert level Myofascial Release Therapist, Forest Therapy Guide, breath work facilitator, nature jouranling teacher, retreat leader, silent disco and embodiment teacher, Stanford Compassion Ambassador and so much more!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My best source of new client is word of mouth!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn and am learning how to ask for support. I came from Scandinavian and stoic heritage, my mother modeled and insisted on doing everything herself- often at her own detriment. I was recently approved as non-profit and am searching for a partner that wants to help me support the inner city kids in San Francisco that are homeless and invisible.
