We were lucky to catch up with Wellington Bullings recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wellington, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project for me was when I created my first music video for my single titled, ‘Flame.’ Not only was writing this song important to me because of the subject matter, but because every single detail from the music, production, and visuals took me completely out of my comfort zone artistically.
I wrote the song in 2020, when the world felt the weight of so many tragic occurrences, one being the resurfacing of racial injustice and violence towards black people. As a black woman, I felt compelled to make a positive contribution with my art. My goal was to write a song that could potentially uplift the black community by sharing a positive narrative that celebrated black excellence, beauty, and power.
At a certain point, I knew that it wasn’t enough for me to just write a song about this subject. I needed to create powerful visuals to fully get my point across, so I wrote the script for my first music video. Not only did I want the visuals to reflect these powerful themes mentioned in the song, but I wanted to support local black-owned businesses in the process. Therefore, I collaborated with local black fashion designers, dancers from the acclaimed Cleo Parker Robinson dance company, videographers, among many other creatives. Most of the fashion was sourced from female local black fashion designers and a few pieces were custom made specifically for the video. I wanted the visuals to convey the message that black people have so much to offer to this world and don’t always have to be portrayed as the victim. Not only do black lives matter, but we also deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated. This project was by far the most powerful, meaningful, and healing piece of work I’ve ever released in my life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a singer, songwriter, musician, and model. As a seasoned performer and trained vocalist I spend most of my time writing music, performing, recording in the studio, and teaching in the Denver area. I’m dedicated to creating music that is uplifting, soothing, and creates a positive impact in the world. My music is a balance of Neo-soul and R&B, with subtle roots in Jazz.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission as a singer/songwriter is to create more beauty in this world with my music. I aim to write music that will soothe my listeners and give them a sense of peace and belonging. It’s important to me that I’m able to offer a powerful experience with my music, visuals, and performances. I want to transport my listeners into a deep emotional world that is full of raw honest beauty, vulnerability, joy, sensuality, and healing.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are many rewarding aspects to being an artist. Many people likes to romanticize about the ‘tortured artist’ stereotype. While some of that might be true, living a creative life is full of juicy adventure, fun, and authenticity. Being an artist is a fearless endeavor because there are many risks involved, but to me those risks are worth every moment I get to spend creating my art. I’d rather spend my life struggling to create the life I desire than settling for a mediocre life out of fear. There are many people who are too afraid to go for what they want in life because of their fear of failure, disappointing others, low self confidence, or laziness…etc. I’m grateful that I work towards creating this life for myself every day. My music and art makes me so happy and I can’t imagine my life without it. My life is full of endless opportunities and freedom to express who I am in my art, and that is what this creative life provides. I never take it for granted.
