We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Weiqian Han a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Weiqian thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I took a year off from high school due to a medical condition and my parents suggested that I study art to help me regain my physical and mental health. During that year, I fell in love with art and decided to pursue it further by studying graphic design at a university in Shanghai. I have always had a lot of ideas and creativity in my life, which I channeled into my studies. Throughout my four years in college, I was captivated by the power of aesthetics and its impact on everything from art to business. This ignited a fire within me, and I knew that I had to pursue a career in design. Driven by this passion, I decided to take my skills to the next level by enrolling in a Master’s program in Motion Media Design at Savannah College of Art and Design. This experience has allowed me to explore new frontiers in the design world and to push the boundaries of my creativity. I am constantly on the lookout for new opportunities to expand my skillset and to make a meaningful impact through my art.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have a strong understanding of design principles, typography and color theory, and I use that to create unique and valuable designs that effectively communicate my client’s message to their audience. I am passionate about finding creative solutions to design problems and I am constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in my work.
I am most proud of the fact that I have helped friends around me to solve design and life challenges. I strive to make a positive impact in the world through my art and my activities. I believe that art is a powerful tool that can be used to communicate important messages and evoke emotions in people. Additionally, I enjoy helping others and counseling. I am a good listener and I believe that it is important to take care of our mental and emotional well-being as well as physical. This approach and being a good listener set me apart from others.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One of the biggest challenges that non-creatives may have in understanding the creative process is that creativity is a messy and iterative process, and the journey towards a deliverable often involves many false starts, dead ends, and revisions. This can be confusing for people who are used to working in a more structured/rules surrounding, as they may struggle to understand why a creative project is taking so long or why it keeps changing.
Also, non-creatives may struggle to understand the value of creativity in a practical sense. Creativity is often seen as a hobby, rather than a valuable aspect of problem-solving and innovation. Non-creative people may not value the hard process of creation. They are more likely to think that a corporate logo or an application icon can be easily concluded without time and research; they may even judge that why such a simple design can be worth tens of thousands of dollars in design fees. Some of our friends think that this intangible creation is a help, not a value. So, creatives may have to work harder to justify the importance of their work to those who do not see it as essential.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Firstly, I was considering creative communities. It is very important for creatives to join a community of like-minded creatives who can provide a sense of belonging, inspiration, and support. Not just your classmates, but also your peers in this whole industry. Secondly, I prefer to attend creative conferences like Adobe MAX, SXSW, can provide an opportunity to network with other creatives, learn about the latest industry trends, and find inspiration.
Finally, last but not least, it is portfolio reviews You may always need suggestions and advice about your work from experts and professions in your industry maybe improve and match social need. Their insights are distinguished from your professors and classmates, more focusing on market.
