We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wei Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wei, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I wanted to become an artist was during my master’s degree, when I felt that I had developed a clear personal artistic style

Wei, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Realizing my understanding of the world through artistic creation has always fascinated me. When I realized that the sculptures I created had a unique style, it was a particularly exciting moment for me. This is the biggest reward for my over ten years of studying art. Later, my work ‘Our Common Friend’ was collected by the China Sculpture Museum and gained attention from the gallery. After graduation, I signed a contract with an agent and held my first personal exhibition in 2019, becoming a professional artist from then on. Because I have invented a unique pulp sculpture material that can not only shape shapes, but also render colors like Chinese ink, forming my own unique Chinese ink style new sculpture. And in 2019, the sculpture “Impressions of Six Horses” also awarded the prestigious China National Arts Fund (CNAF).

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, I believe the most meaningful aspect of art is the ability to observe the world from an independent perspective, discover new problems in aesthetics, and provide a very poetic answer

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There is ongoing turmoil, oppression, and unfairness in this world, and many people still live in darkness. However, art is a placebo and a real spiritual paradise. Art is a safe haven in this cruel world, and I believe this is the practical significance of art and one of the motivations for me to become an artist
